This is interesting. I used to live in Calif. I vaguely recall some discussion about it, but only after looking at this. This is the largest body of water in California. (I guess that does not include the East bank of the Pacific!) Ha!
I am posting this here, as a bit of history trivia.

I feel like this was one of the areas covered by "Abandoned America". I watched it a couple months ago and this story rings familiar. Interesting situation for sure!
On a side note, I was expecting the show to cover Centralia PA, but it didn't.
