From below, there was a discussion regarding slang terms specific to surveying.
I ran across this page of wild land fire fighting terms. They have us beat by a mile for the number of slang terms. I found it interesting.

"whistle pigs" meaning groundhogs....
I knew that one from my Appalachian buddies when I lived in the western NC mountains.
Cicadas around here north west of Atlanta are often referred to as "tree-hogs".
