Our school district is trying to update our heat/air systems in some of our buildings.?ÿ During a work session last evening our Superintendent told us something that had been discovered and had us make a related guess.?ÿ What is now the elementary building has multiple heating units with each serving two adjoining classrooms.?ÿ They discovered one of these units had a date of manufacture on its metal tag that surprised everyone.?ÿ He asked us to guess what that year of manufacture might be.?ÿ Most were guessing 1990 or 1980 or maybe 1970.?ÿ My guess was 1953 or 1954 as the building was started in 1953 and completed in 1954.?ÿ The correct answer was 1947.

?ÿ

Later, my nephew who serves on the School Board with me asked me what year my parents built the house he and his brother now own.?ÿ I told him it was started in the Fall of 1964 and was 99 percent complete by Spring 1965.?ÿ It was one of the very few constructed during that time frame in our area that was an all-electric house.?ÿ No gas, no propane, no wood for heat.?ÿ The reason he asked was that within the past week they had to replace one baseboard heating unit.?ÿ This was the first of those to fail completely in 56 years.?ÿ Some thermostats had been replaced on other identical units but this was the first need for total replacement.

About 1015 I had our furnace, air conditioner, and water heater replaced.?ÿ They were all from 1976.?ÿ The HVAC guy said the water heater company screwed up about that time and made some that lasted, and he still sees one once in a while.?ÿ The ones from the '80's are nearly all gone.

"Old things still in use"... I could take that kinda personal you know...

I've got a 25 year old fridge that is still ginning along.?ÿ But I did recently replaced a 25 year old automatic dishwasher though.?ÿ The guy that put in the new one was younger than the old washer.?ÿ He was amazed it had lasted that long.

I told him we didn't use it very often...then my wife kneed the back of my leg.

About 1015

You knew that had to be wrong unless I had a time machine to go back before 1976
