It just occurred to me that we live about a block from the marathon route. We could walk over there and watch crazy people run by!
For my wife's 50th birthday we decided to spend a night in South Lake Tahoe and then day hike up the Eagle Lake trail into Desolation Valley Wilderness the next morning.?ÿ What we didn't know until the next morning was that it was Tahoe Marathon day, and the stretch of highway that runs past the trailhead was closed for the event.?ÿ So we decided to hike several miles cross-country, via Cascade Lake, to the trailhead.?ÿ That turned out to involve a lot of very steep bushwacking and lengthy terrain-mandated detours, with the result that our modest day hike turned into an 18-miler that ended back at the car well after dark on a moonless night with a large pack of coyotes yipping somewhere nearby.?ÿ
It was a memorable day, but not one I'd care to repeat.
