I assume there are a number of people on this forum that not only choose to spend their time working in the outdoors but also to play in the outdoors.?ÿ I grew up hunting and fishing in Montana and have been going back home nearly every Thanksgiving to hunt on our family ranch since I left for college.?ÿ I never really understood that proud look on my Dad's face the year I took my first buck when I was 12.?ÿ Well, I finally get it...my Son's first might not officially make?ÿBoone & Crocket but I couldn't be?ÿmore proud?ÿof him and the 250 yard neck shot he put on his first Mule Deer.?ÿ He was cool, calm and collected and?ÿfelt like such a contributor being able to put nearly 100 pounds of meat in our freezer.?ÿ?ÿI hope for such luck to everyone else!

First Hunt

Good work!?ÿ One trick I've learned is to skin while it's hanging whole on the gambrel then use a torch to scorch the straggling hairs off.?ÿ?ÿWish I could be there to help you break it down!?ÿ Congrats!?ÿ Looks like a lot of good meat!?ÿ

The elk came out of the brush in 6 pieces. Left the parts of hide on to keep it as clean as possible while dragging. Last elk I loaded whole into the rig was a 5 point bull south of Ennis in about 1992 - nothing comes out whole were I shot this one. Iƒ??d be glad for your help if you were around... my 7 year old loves to try to help.

Maybe you misread...I said wish I were there to help you break it down, not haul it out...

I think I know where you're at and that's tough sledding!?ÿ My Dad said it makes it taste better...

They're here, too:

http://www.elkarama.co.nz/history.html

I can remember reading a story that said for years after the first introduction, they were protected and not hunted. Then the first hunt happend (sp), possibly the one in the article, and they said because the animals had never seen a human (two-legged beast) before, they could walk amongst them.
