SEC - 6
Big 12 - 5
Big Ten - 4
PAC Ten - 3
ACC - 3
Mountain West - 2
WAC - 2

I did this tally quickly, so forgive if I miscounted.

There were 7 last week, but South Carolina beat Florida, who therefore dropped out.

Your joshing me, right?

6 from the SEC, 5 from the Big 12, 4 from the Big 10, 3 from the Pac 10, 3 from the ACC, 2 from the Mountain West and 2 from the WAC.

The reason I brought up zero from the Big East is that the Big East Champion could get the "Whammy" this year. If the Champion of the Mountain West, WAC or other non-automatic bid conferences is ranked 12th or better, or ranked 16th or better and an automatic qualifying champion is ranked lower.

With TCU @ 3 and Boise State @ 4, and no Big East potential champion with a chance to be 16 or better, the Big East is "Out the door" and one of the above gets the automatic qualifier. The other will get an "At large" bid.

The case could be made that if the ACC champion is lower than 16 then the other champion should take their automatic bid as well. Currently Viginia Tech is ranked 16, Miami 24 and Florida State 25. There is a probability that the ACC Champion could be ranked 17 or lower at the end of the year. At any rate, TCU and Boise State are getting big paydays. This scenario will have a lot of support from the SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 10 who all want a second team in a BCS bowl. Shutting out the Big East and ACC opens up slots.

Care About What ?

I just read a serious internet article that said Penn State should leave the Big Ten and Join the Big East. Paterno tried for years to form the Big East, but they were very reluctant. Once they finally organized the ACC looted them for Boston College. A New Big East should also have Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

But it ain't gonna happen.

Here's to Confusion to the Enemy!

Of course when the Royal Navy officers made that toast they were talking serious business, not playing around with their balls.
