Hello..new to surveying does anyone know of any books or websites where i can learn more about surveying like how monuments are used and how tp use the total station..want to learn as mucj as i can?ÿ
Elementary Surveying by Wolf and Ghilani.?ÿ Some recent but not latest editions can be found cheap.
If you are in a public land survey system PLSS state, the BLM manual, not latest edition, that can be found on line.?ÿ Just remember that much of it is history or not applicable unless you are one of the rare people doing division of new lands.
Some book on legal principles of boundary surveying.?ÿ Remember the first principle, accepted monuments rule over measurements.
The Land Surveyors Reference Manual also gives a short overview of a broad range of topics. It will include some of the key constants and basics you will need to learn.
The latest Msnual of Instructions is free in PDF. I prefer hard copy but they can be a bit spendy. I take a different approach than Bill. The PLSS is the foundation in every state I hold a license. Knowing it inside and out is critical to understanding how to follow the footsteps of the original surveyor...
Good luck, Tom?ÿ
Your profile says you are in Huntington Station New York.?ÿ?ÿ That means all the adjoining states original surveys are colonial based. The above references to Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would have limited application in your area. The United States Geologic Survey (USGS) has an online article on the PLSS that will help you understand the difference.?ÿ Ohio is the transition/test area from colonial to PLSS surveys one of the maps in the article shows Ohio original Surveys.?ÿ I believe New York has original surveys completed under both Dutch and British colonial systems.?ÿ As noted above the text Elementary Surveying by Wolf and Ghilani is an excellent place to start your education.?ÿ The?ÿNew York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors web site should also be of help.
