I was about to submit some share sessions that would have to use Rapid orbits, in order to meet the Friday deadline for use in the Geoid18, and saw this notice.?ÿ I guess I'll wait until they can use Precise orbits.
To help improve the next hybrid geoid model, GEOID18, please opt to share your solution! To participate, choose The deadline to contribute to GPS on Bench Marks has been extended to Friday, 9/21/18.
Well crap- I was looking forward to the rat race being over..... :-/
I did one Friday night close to my house but it was not a priority mark. There is a priority mark about 18 miles from me but it is not suitable due to trees (my opinion).?ÿ Is there any rhyme or reason to the ones they pick or would the nearest observable BM be just as good?
The one on the list is BY1443?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ Y401 reset 1963?ÿ?ÿ too many trees
The closest one that is reasonably open BY2432?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ V1296?ÿ?ÿ 1980?ÿ Deer stand right beside it for sale but could be moved. With another three weeks, I could get it easy.
I'm not sure what their goal is. Older BM's? Certain runs between towns?
James
This one would be fun to do just because of the history of the mark, the town, and the college.

The goal is to compare good leveled NAVD88 values with GPS observations and to have a comparison with two sessions of at least 4 hours each on the marks, every 30 or 40 km where practical.?ÿ
If the priority mark isn't workable, the next closest one that is would be useful.
Good NAVD88 is ideally 1st or 2nd order, but they have allowed some resets (3rd order automatically). I deduce their selection process for the priority list was based mostly on the distances, with little attention to the descriptions as demonstrated by seeing marks on their list on vertical walls, ones haven't been reported in many decades, and some that the last recovery says aren't suitable.?ÿ With so many needed to cover the country, it was probably too big a job to check all that.
More submissions are better, but a lot of areas aren't going to get that coverage.?ÿ Our DOT had no funding for this so has only done submissions where it meshed with other work, mostly in the other end of the state from me.?ÿ Almost no one besides me has submitted anything around here.
Well, today isn't going the best. I'm at my third priority mark (only one is on NGS priority list) of the day (photos of why not the others will be posted but not from my phone).?ÿ
Forecast is for showers and t-storms mainly after 3 PM, but I just got set up when the first drops fell at 10 am and wetted the pavement before slacking off.?ÿ Pretty much gray in the west.?ÿ Will give it a chance and hope not too much water on the antenna.
Here is my primary target for the day as photographed last summer:
I made a 2.5 meter antenna pole with this one specifically in mind, although I have used the pole on others recently.
Today I made the 2-hour drive to it, intending to get a session and then go on in that direction to visit family.?ÿ Here's what I found:
The RR has built a new signal building on the other side of the tracks and removed the old one.?ÿ Must have run into the post with their machinery.?ÿ It has been "removed from the area to prevent someone re-planting it and causing confusion."?ÿ
Would any of you tried to put the broken post together and measure it?
This one was the subject of the longest level run I've done.?ÿ Several years ago before first logging it, I suspected this might have been affected by the addition of the building so ran a 1/3 mile run from the post office and came out 0.005 ft off the data sheet so called it Found Good.?ÿ Now I get to submit Destroyed.
?ÿ
Here's the NGS priority mark.?ÿ It didn't look so bad last year with less tree growth and no train, although I did report sky blocked North and NW.?ÿ Today it appears about half the sky is blocked by trees and at least one train goes by every hour.?ÿ Don't think I'm going to do this one.?ÿ Missing both of those marks leaves a huge hole.?ÿ Much of three counties has no GPS vs NAVD comparison.?ÿ There is one more possibility but it is on a dirt road so won't check it in today's rain and as I recall there is somewhat of a tree problem there, too.
?ÿ
August share results.?ÿ A lot of states are going hot and heavy with 50, 100, or more shares.?ÿ Sadly, my puny six contributions were over half of those in our state in this report.
