We are looking to upgrade to our first base and rover setup (been using several network Hiper SR rovers for a few years) and seemed to have settled on the Carlson Brx7s, as the price point and initial reviews seem to match what we are looking for. I was wondering if anyone on here has experience using this setup and what their likes/dislikes are. Will be run with a Carlson RT4 tablet and SurvPC.
They will be used in Central Maine where there is no shortage of heavy canopy.

I run a two crew shop. I purchased a base rover set about two months ago, I bought a second set a month later... these units change the game. We have heavy canopy here in SC and the BRX7 will blow your mind, heck shoot a building on tilt... I even shot a FFE with the thing then set up a robot to check it all. Mind blown.?ÿ

If the network you use has L5 then jump on a rover only, or at least demo one. ?ÿIf the network doesn??t have L5 do not waste your money on a rover only. The network here in South Carolina doesn??t have L5 and a base rover setup is night and day different. The return on investment is there... I have done tree surveys with a BRX7 b/r, complete topo asbuilts without setting up a robot, did a boundary survey on 50 acres of old growth hardwoods in a half a day, topos in the woods. It never gets left at the office, ever.?ÿ
Whenever someone posts about the "mind blowing" performance of a recently purchased RTK setup I ask myself "what were they using previously to compare against?"?ÿ
@mark-mayer we were using Topcon Gr-3 units with gps+Glonass. Our old units wouldn??t fix near the tree line. The BRX7 is the cats meow. Here in The South before the L5 gps would not work at all under tree canopy so everything in ??the woods? had to run with optical equipment... GPS that fixes in the woods is the game changer. Don??t buy it. I hope no one does... winning.
How many L5's do you usually pick up and how many do you need to make a difference? We are still a few years short of full deployment.
Appreciate the responses guys, we are definitely leaning towards the purchase and I am getting a demo next week. Had the opportunity to try out my friends Trimble SPS985 base and rover setup to get an idea of the capabilities of a system with similar technical specs. Was definitely impressed with the repeatability and location of fixes.
This is compared to our network rovers that only track GPS+Glonass.?ÿ
@Hooks you were spot on. We picked up the setup and I took it through the ringer the first day. Was getting redundant Fixed and Fixed+ positions within several hundredths (B/R) in deep canopy that our current network rover would not even touch. I did manage to get it to bust a few fixes in tall pine stands(redundant measurements 30 mins later had a different position by .50 ft), but nothing that wouldn't be easily discovered with proper procedures.?ÿ
We also found out that our states network has started upgrading their RTK VRS network with L5 capable CORS and they are working towards full deployment for use in both the network and single baseline solutions. So we are looking forward to seeing what the BRX7s can do as network rovers as well.?ÿ
@brad-ott I would highly suggest getting a demo, these new units are not a "cure all" solution, but it has me quite impressed with what they are able to do.?ÿ

How do you find info on what signals a states RTN broadcasts? Curious if NC has L5 available yet.

I purchased the Carlson BRx6+ base/rover a couple of years ago and have been very pleased with them. Has anybody seen any significant improvements between them and the 7?

I am currently looking to upgrade my SP-80 base to a BRx to pair with my BRx7 rover. What is everyone's experience with a setup like this? Is it standard to run a BRx6 as a base and 7 for the rover? My mind goes there as I come from the Trimble world of R6 or R8 bases and R10 rovers... maybe in this case it's worth getting another BRx7 just to expand my options though.
I want to pair this with a Carlson Surveyor2. We currently have a Spectra Ranger 7 and my field guy says he'll have Popeye arms by the time Summer is over. I'm over the big screens, glad to see the trend is going back to practical with the latest Trimble offering.?ÿ
Interesting enough, since the TSC5 and 7 are out, we were just told the TSC3 will not be supported by Trimble in the next 6-8 months.
