Hi everyone,

Recently we discovered a very serious issue when turning off 'Tilt Features' with the BrX7 in SurvPC/SurvCE 6.15.

If you are locating anything with 'Correct Tilted Pole' feature activated and calibrated, and then turn off 'Tilt Features' completely, the BrX7 will apply that horizontal difference to the rest of your shots/positions.

I was topoing a parking lot with 'Correct Tilted Pole' on for a number of hours. At the end of the day, I decided to check into pre-existing control on the site that we had set a while ago. All of the checked points were roughly 0.7' off of what they should have been, but relatively the checked points agreed in horizontally and vertically between each other. After a lot of head scratching and this happening to another crew on the same day, we realized that however much the pole is tilted when 'Tilt Features' is being turned off, that compensated values are being applied to all subsequent points. The BrX7 should be reconfiguring itself when 'Tilt Features' is turned off but in SurvPC 6.15 that is bot the case - you would have to restart the BrX7 or switch job files for the reconfiguration to fully take affect.

While restarting the BrX7 is not big issue while a patch is released, the fact that located monuments or control points could have been considerably wrong without our realizing. Again, points located with this malfunctioning happening would appear to agree with each other but they would not be in true grid. It was only because two crews were checking into pre-existing control and monuments that this was even discovered. The latter crew were off several feet.

Carlson was made aware of this malfunction a week ago and have confirmed it - it is not present in SurvPC 6.14.?ÿ If anyone is using a BrX7 with SurvPC/CE 6.15, you should check to see if it is malfunctioning with those steps and if anything located might have incorrect coordinates.

How much tilt correction would have to be involved to be off several feet?

@lurker In that particular instance, our crew member was under thick canopy when he turned the tilt feature off and the sensor (because it's based on GNSS readings) was out at that moment.?ÿ

In controlled tests with fixed solution and having the pole leaning towards me when shutting off tilt features, it ended up being off around 1'.

@brad-ott You're welcome - figured everyone else should be aware - we've been deep diving all the work we did since SurvPC 6.15 to see if we need to redo anything.

UPDATE:

Hi again everyone.

Apparently Carlson released a version 6.16 of SurvPC/CE on August 1st that fixed the Mattoon, however they did not inform us of it. Further they never informed the user base of the problem and even the wording in the release notes do not really state the importance of it.

Today I received an email from Carlson asking me to upgrade SurvPC and giving a good (to me) explanation of the issue.?ÿ I don't have a BRX7 but I am a SurvPC & Survey user.?ÿ The email said they began notifying some users weeks ago.?ÿ?ÿ For other reasons, today I finally got around to signing up for an account on their website and I got the email shortly after I signed up. Perhaps they notified me as soon as they had an email for me.
