Hi all,

My name's Chad Gray and I'm not a surveyor, so please pardon my ignorance in this area. I'm actually a filmmaker that needs a gps system.
The director for the project I'm working on is requesting a Topcon GPS Hiper PRO RTK base and rover in order log the positioning of each shot. I honestly have very to no idea how this system works and sadly I don't have the time to educate myself because I need to get this device tomorrow. Can any of you help me by:

1.) Pointing me in the direction of a reputable surveying equipment rental service in Los Angeles, CA.
2.) Introducing me to someone who owns the Topcon GPS Hiper PRO RTK base and rover and would be willing to rent it out.
3.) Another system that performs the same function as this device.

Any assistance you all can offer would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I can't help you with Los Angeles. Try Google or Yellow Pages.

But I don't think anybody is going to take that gear and get reliable answers tomorrow if they have no prior experience. It's going to take more training than your Garmin handheld.

I'm guessing they want repeatability of very few inches. That would be about right for RTK, but it could also be done with a total station and some nails in the ground. While that requires training also, it might be less subject to accidentally getting bad answers.

You might luck out and catch the attention of an Angelino tonite at either of these two sites:

Hello Chad, are you with Slim Pictures? Anyway, I'm a VFX Set Surveyor who now owns a survey equipment sales and rental business. I have a good solution for you made by Leica Geosystems not Topcon, but I think it will meet your needs. I happen to be located in Northern CA, not LA at the moment so training would be difficult, but I would be happy to rent it to you and give a few pointers. If you want to fly up here and get trained that's also an option. If you need help from someone local I recommend calling James Yaccino, your area Leica rep. He could rent you something and give you a quick how to. Keep in mind that GPS will not work in the studio, and under trees or next to buildings performance will suffer. I recommend renting a internet connected rover to connect to the CA Real Time Network and eliminate having to deal with a base and radios. As long as you have cell coverage where you're shooting that option would work. Give me a call tomorrow if you want to discuss further. My name is Will Haynes and my number is nine four nine, five hundred, zero two eight nine.

Hello Chad,

RDOIC is the Topcon Dealer in your area. I work for the company but do not cover that area. If PM me your contact info I will forward it to the one of our sales reps in that area.
We do rent base and rovers but it is on a monthly basis. We have a data collection software called Pocket 3D that will make it easy for you set up both the base and rover it will also make it easy to collect the necessary points. With saying all of that depending on how long you need the base and rover it may be cheaper to contact a professional to collect the data needed.

Let me know if you have any questions
