A friend of mine, a non-surveyor who has done a fair amount of plane table mapping (mostly of archeological sites), is looking for an alidade in working order to replace his old K&E that was involuntarily transferred from his possession. Does anyone have such an item that they'd be interested in selling?
Kent,
What type is he looking for a high post or a low post alidade? Any particular maker?

I'd assume that he wants a high post alidade. His old unit was K&E, but I'd imagine that any US-made alidade with an engraved reticle would be fine as long as it was in good, serviceable condition.
Looks brand new!

I had a K&E Expedition Alidade that was, you might say new, as I only used on one job in 1976 to do a sight topo for a planned subdivision. I lucked out in 2013 and managed to find a buyer for it and all the peripherals , i.e., two boards, an 18"x24" and a 24"x30"? or maybe 24"x36"?, the tripod and a Metalite Stadia Board. I sold the complete unit for $1275 plus about $275 shipping costs. It was something that I thought I would have until I went to the big surveyors home in the sky.
I have a c 1951 K&E alidade in a leather carry case. No table, no tripod, just the instrument and carry case. It appears that all tiny accessories are here. Does this interest you?

The link is to the description card for a surveying instrument display at the National Maritume Museum in London. If the link does not work it quotes am English mathematician, Thomas Diggs who described the plane table in 1591 as 'an instrument only for the ignorant and unlearned, that have no knowledge of numbers.'
Mathematicians still wonder why they have difficulty making friends...

It has been awhile since I've run into my friend, so I'm not sure whether he's found an alidade or not. I'll check with him and give a status report.

Thank you.
