Today I'm participating in a panel discussion for the career program at a local 5A High School.?ÿ The topic is Engineering and related?ÿprofessions.?ÿ I will be speaking about the Land Surveying profession and my wife will be speaking about Civil Engineering.?ÿ I'm excited to be able to introduce some of these kids to what we do as Surveyors and how it can lead to an exciting professional career.?ÿ
My wife and I are also mentoring a local STEM class.?ÿ Their project is the design and construction of a Fire Station and associated infrastructure.?ÿ
Wish us luck!
Well I'm just gonna give up and go home, there ain't no toppin that!
Seriously, Congratulations to you and your wife and thank you for investing in our future.

This is fantastic public service! ?ÿI wish far more of our brethren and cistern would make a similar effort routinely.
That is outstanding. Nice you can double team it with your wife. I plan to start seeking these opportunities soon and carry them into retirement. Last Saturday, I helped hang up 1,001 maps that were entered for the annual El Dorado County Student Map Contest. I have been involved with this contest for about 15 years, as this is the county where I live and the current County Surveyor has been a friend for over 30 years.

Many years ago I gave a presentation on surveying for my daughter's 3rd grade class. The kids seem to really enjoy it, especially all the gadgets on my belt, like the right-angle prism. When I was done, one of the boys said to me, very excitedly "I wanted to be the President when I grow up, but now I want to be a surveyor." I had told them about the men on Mt. Rushmore, so I replied "well, you can be both."

I guess I never thought about this as being exciting. Well standing motionless in the middle of the street can be, and perhaps finding a 100 year old stone may approach exciting. But in your case the dinner table discussion might add some spice to your career. How does she feel about continuing education??ÿ

Just got back and it was a pretty cool experience.?ÿ Approximately 200 students showed up which I'm told was more than double the attendance?ÿof any?ÿof the other professional panels they've done.?ÿ Besides myself and my wife there was a Petroleum Engineer turned Patent Attorney and a 5th year dual degree Electrical/Bio Med Engineering college student.?ÿ The attendees were pretty engaged for HS students and asked some really good questions of all the panelists.?ÿ I had to sell it pretty hard to administration to be included in the panel but afterwards all the counseling department staff thanked me.?ÿ May have just been a couple future Surveyor's in the bunch.?ÿ I don't do much public speaking, I?ÿhope I did our profession justice.
Cheers!
