Linux for Work a well written article, worth a quick read.

I agree with most of it but strongly prefer the Linux Mint Debian Edition and/or Pinguy distributions over Ubuntu.

I currently run multiple boot with Windows 7, LMDE, and Pinguy... sharing the same data and resources, and all backed up to common locations.

A good clearing house to read up on the many flavors can be found at Distro Watch.

I have a home computer running command-line Debian. It serves music and videos to our laptops and roku boxes. It also hosts my dad's small biz website.
I also have a computer in my garage running Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I use it for music and a quick internet reference when I'm working on the car, etc.

Until Carlson runs on Linux, I won't switch my work computer. I understand you can dual-boot, but I don't want to have one "computer" for email, word processing, etc. and one "computer" for cad. I'm not going to mess with virtual machines...
Linux is a lot of fun, though. I love playing with it.

My problem with all that stuff is it is mostly open source and therefore no one place you can go for support if you need it.
As an example: if you bought a Dell machine and loaded it up Linux or Umbuntu(sp?) and stuff and call them for some support and they find you have put all that on the machine they would likely say they don't support it - good bye.
Windows 7, Vista, XP, XP-Pro - no problem. They will hang with you.

That's just my 2 pence.

Generally, if you are still at the level where you are calling Dell for software support, I would highly recommend that you don't install Linux.

ubuntuforums.com is a GREAT place to go to for support.
If you've got a problem, chances are, someone else has had that EXACT same problem.
I can find the answer to most problems by searching. If I have to ask, it usually gets addressed pretty quickly.
