Need to Convert PDF to JPG to import into CAD
Posted by Lugeyser on April 29, 2019 at 2:03 pmI like to overlay the paper (or pdf provided by engineer) copy of the plans over the CAD when prepping stakeout to look for discrepancies. But I am reduced right now to doing a screenshot or a snip which distorts the image substantially. Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable program which would allow me to convert a pdf to a good quality jpg?
Thanks

IrfanView. You will have to install a plugin with it in order to view and convert PDF files. Instructions are on the IrfanView website.
The program is a powerful image processing package, but is a little user-unfriendly. The author wrote it for his own use, then shared it with the world, so he wasn’t too concerned with making the user interface pretty.

Can you insert the PDF as an xref? We have C3D so I’m not sure if that’s a C3D option or if it applies to your version of CAD.

I’ve been using Foxit for my pdf editing for over a year now. It’s about one-third the price of Adobe Acrobat. It has a few quirks, but mostly works fine. It will convert a pdf to jpg. But you can xref pdfs into autocad directly. No conversion needed.

If you are using Autocad or Carlson Intellicad, you can use PDFIMPORT to import the pdf as linework and block it to align to your cad file.
-
PDFATTACH imports an image which bogs down the cad engine, PDFIMPORT converts the pdf (most of it) to lines that you can block and then align it to your cad line work. I find it works much better.

I have a program called PDF Architect that is pretty reasonable costwise and may do what you are trying to do. They just came out with Version 7 about 2 weeks ago, about a week after I had just upgraded to Version 6. One thing about this program is that you can get the newer version and still keep the older ones.

CamScanner phone app will create an image and send in email as a pdf or jpeg in several qualities and from business allow to crop from card to ledger.
Irfranview is an awesome program.

have you tried an online PDF to dwg converter?
I used one the other day and it was awesome. Can’t say which one as I didn’t save the link – bit thick!!!I expect it depends on whether its a PDF from Cad or a PDF of other origins.
Bricscad will insert a PDF and I trace what I want then delete.

I like Bluebeam Revu.
Convert the JPG to TIF with 2 colors and you can see through it…
Or change the Fade of the JPG to see white crosshairs.
-
Bluebeam adds the project management functionality to distribute RFIs and plan updates to the design/construction team, which is great if you need that (and everybody else on the team also has it). But as a pdf editor, Foxit is it’s equal. And Foxit is well under half the price.

I do this conversion all the time with PDFCreator as a printer. When you get to the output/saveas window, select .png for the output.

PDFIMPORT is an unknown command on my Civil3D 2016.
It sounds good though, which AutoCAD are you using that has it?
-
That appears to be correct. I have Civil 3D 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019 installed on this PC. PDFIMPORT does appear in 2017 onwards, but not 2015. I would assume if it is/isn’t in Civil 3D, then it is/isn’t in AutoCAD.

I feel like there??s something I??m missing, but for what it??s worth; can??t you just do a ??save as? of the pdf, and change the extension type to jpg? Or if you want the pdf, I type xref to open the xref dialog box, right click inside of that, and there is an ??insert pdf? (or something along those lines) option. And I align and scale it onto property lines or something well defined.

In Adobe Acrobat Pro DC
Under the file menu select: Export to
In that flyout select: Image
In that flyout select the kind of Image file to want saved.
Give it a name and Save it.
If you use TBC you can just import a PDF file directly. Won’t AutoCAD do that?

I’ve been using the Universal Document Converter for years now with Carlson Survey and have been quite happy with it. If you go on their website they should still offer a free download which is fully functional except that it leaves a watermark on the file. Last time I had to upgrade/ reload the program it cost about $40, so it’s not a very big investment.
