Leica 1200 firmware
Posted by JMonell on December 31, 2012 at 8:07 pmHappy New Year everyone-
I have a Leica System 1200 that has worked perfectly since I received it in 2007. After the latest fiasco, which did not affect me, I thought I would update my system to the latest firmware. After deleting all the files, I realized I don’t have a maintenance program on my unit. I tried reinstalling the old firmware, but all I get is the initial Leica Geosystems splash screen, the desktop icons, then a hanging hourglass.
My questions – is there a hotkey I can press during startup that will reset/reformat the unit? I have a copy of the system.ram file, should I copy that back on to the unit?
Thanks to all-
John

Dealers have access to a recovery software version that can fix the problem. They may charge you am hour labor for it but its better than the alternative.
Try reformatting the card and trying again.
John,
It sounds as though the unit has not been upgraded our formatted for some time from your post. The first you need to inspect is … do you have a Leica Branded CF card or are you using a generic CF card? If you are using a generic CF card to upgrade the firmware then you will have issues. There are differences in the Leica Branded CF cards and generic cards. I have seen this issue over and over from users. You need a Leica branded CF card to update the firmware. Your local salesman/dealer will probably tell you different.
If you are using a Leica branded CF card, please do the following and try to install the firmware again. If you are using a generic card, please go by a dealership and ask them to try this with a Leica branded card…
1. First you need to completely format the CF card… from Main Menu choose 6 Tools…
2. Next choose 1 Format Memory Device
3. In the Format Method: field …. Change this to Format complete and then select F1 (CONT) to begin the format
4. Once the Leica card is formatted, copy the system firmware file under the System folder on the card
5. Try to upgrade the firmware again
If the system will not accept the firmware after these steps….
!!!!You will lose everything from your receiver when you do this!!!!!!
No big deal but you will need to re build your coordinate systems, codelists, etc. I would not use an old SYSTEM RAM file if the receiver is acting in this manner. So I would…
1. First you need to completely format the CF card… from Main Menu choose 6 Tools…
2. Next choose 1 Format Memory Device
3. Next choose F4 (PROGS)… the system will ask if you are sure… select YES every time and the unit should shut down completely
4. Repeat the steps but next choose F5 (SYSTM) )… the system will ask if you are sure… select YES every time and the unit should shut down completely
You have now clear all memory in the system… try to load the firmware again. If you are still having issues please send me the following information and I can help.
1. From Main Menu choose the USER key
2. Next select F3 (STAT)
3. Next choose 3 System InformationFrom the Instrument page send the type of instrument listed in the Instr Type: field (first line)
From Firmware page send the Firmware: field value (first line) the Maintenance End: value (second line) and the Meas EngineL value (seventh line)
The recovery firmware may be needed but I do not think that is the issue yet. I can send you the recovery firmware and instructions on how to complete the process if needed later.
Mark
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I think I should have left the unit alone and let it run with the old firmware. Mark, your instructions are great, but I can’t get to the menus to run the update. I get the initial Leica splash, next the desktop icons, and finally the stalled hourglass. I’m trying to interupt the startup so I can format the device , but I haven’t found a way. Not sure if recovery software is needed, glad to know it’s out there.
John,
Can you tell me about what version of firmware you had on the instrument. I can get you the recovery firmware. My company is a Leica Dealership and I worked for Leica Tech Support for 7 years. The recovery firmware was usually on the CD that came with a new instrument or if you received updated versions before everything went online. Most recovery firmware’s are generic but I also need to make sure I can get you the actually firmware file in case you have a corrupt version of the main firmware file.
Just let me know if you need more help.
Hi Mark-
According to my Leica myworld account, the controller had v5.10. Not sure if that’s the firmware. Still looking for the original packing, but I have moved offices about 10 times since the purchase, never good for finding something.
And at the bottom of the pile of archive boxes, my files from 2007. Under a set of as-builts, my original CD that came with my gear. Suddenly there’s a tunnel, no light, but it’s a start-
John,
I have all of the needed files now. I did not have the Recovery Firmware version that you needed but I got it from Leica Tech Support. You will just need a fully charged battery, a special file that will delete the existing firmware and then the recovery firmware. I have what you need if you want me to email it to you.
After the recovery is done we will need to get the full version of the firmware loaded. We can determine your maintenance date once we get your unit up and running. You may be able to load a version higher than FW 5_10.
Mark
good morning could you help me with something? for some years I have a 1200 tcp1201 + leica and it has worked very well I have never used it as a robotic station because I do not buy accessories. Now a friend offers me a Cs35 tablet. the question is with this tablet could I use my station as a robot, or does my station not have it? Thanks in all regards from Mexico.
1200+ Series can be controlled by CS20 at least. You’ll need the right version of the firmware to suit Captivate version 1 2 or 3.
Register the both in Leica MyWorld and see what you can find out. Firmware release notes should contain the compatibility information
The TCRP-1201 could have. I’m not sure about the new cs tablet though

Saved yourself some money there
saw this here a while back, could your unit be of this era ?

oops wrong thread
@surveythemark Hi Mark, would you happen to have that firmware recovery file. I came across this post when I was upgrading my GRX1200 GG Pro and the update failed and I need a way to recover the device. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Best,
Max
@surveythemark Gooday, Please, I came across a Leica 1200+ instrument with “firmware v7.53, Maintenance end 18.08.10, ME v4.003, ME boot v4.002”, it is not tracking at all. Is there a way around this? I tried updating(degrading rather, to 3.8xx) the ME, and it returned “successful” but was not effective.
If you used Bluetooth to connect the receiver and controller it will not update but generally says successful. If you connect with the correct cable (I cannot remember the cable number) it will update, if your maintenance was current as of the date of the updated firmware.
Hello, i face a similar problem. My Tcr1205 doesn’t boot anymore after a new firm failed to install. Now when i boot it shows loading error 0x3200002. Can you please help?
Hey friend, Hope you are doing well. I have a rx1250 controller. In the system information, the instrument type has been changed to GX1200. How can I change it to the RX1250?
Because of this problem Ican not use this controller. If it is possible for you, help me PLZ.
Thanks alot

Hello! Try this archive with an explanation for the TPS1200 total station

Hello Reza. I have the same problem with my Leica RX1250TC. I replaced my backup battery in the controller, but the controller does not show its serial number and still appears as a GX1200. It seems that this is connected with files in RAM drive, or the WinCE registry. I’m still trying to fix it on my own without a service center
If someone could share with me the “System.ram” file from the Leica RX1250TC controller, I could say for sure if the missing serial numbers and device type is related to the RAM disk
