I may just be getting old and cranky

But anyone who sets up a plan set with north oriented at the bottom of the page for no apparent reason should be horse whipped.

I agree.

Better get busy horse whipping DOTs then. In my experience, they seem to do it the most.

It happens- last month Adopted File (8yo) announced he did not believe in Santa Claus- Mrs. File informed both he and I that she ??didn??t believe in golly old men either.?

I tend to agree, but I’ve shown North at less than straight upright a few times in order to fit everything on a conventionally sized sheet at a sensible scale and sensibly organized — i.e. without the legend or something being in the client’s front yard, etc. Didn’t like it, but I done it.

Hell Fleming, you are already old and cranky. Git yer whip and c??mon down to Florida World and whip my ass. My site/plot plans have North arrows pointing every which way except North. ????

There is a rumor that no matter where he was in the city, an old party chief’s “north arrow” pointed to his favorite bar.

I assume your plans have an apparent reason for their orientation, like placement of roads on the plan to align with the borders
Having the key map on the cover page (for about a 65 acre highway realignment project) with north down and the subsequent 20 detail sheets with north up is grounds for a whipping.

This thread is showing your Toxic Northist Privilege.
Those of that naturally favor South will have Justice one way or the other. South Arrowists Rise Up! You only have your Northist Chains to Lose!

My understanding is that DOTs place priority on their stationing increasing left to right on their right of way monument maps – north taking a secondary position.

North up is tradition. South up is progressive. Make North Great Again.

If North is always supposed to be up, then why do North arrows exist?
-
The old convention is for roads to be stationed from West to East or South to North. I prefer for North to point up or right on a boundary survey, but don’t really mind as long as there is an arrow pointing in the right direction.
-
Based on CAD standards, north should always be illustrated as being Up or to the Right. It references how the sheet is held when being viewed.
