Essential tools for Surveyors
Posted by nate-the-surveyor on March 19, 2017 at 5:54 pmThings we carry, on our person.
Leatherman.
Small pocket saw. Like Gerber or Corona brands. Stihl makes one. 7″ to 9″ long.
Good pocket knife.
Wide and good belt. Sufficient to carry tools.
Compass. Such as Suunto.
Small camera. I carry a Cannon Powershot SX 230 It’s a 12 MP camera.
Often, a cell phone, but sometimes it stays in truck.Tools. It seems, if I leave one behind… I inevitably need it.

Never fails…never.

Camera is on the cell phone. So is the compass. So that’s covered.
A small folding tree saw has been a relatively recent addition to my truck. I’m not sure how I got along without it. Actually, I am. I chopped through thick branches with a machete. Tree saw much better for that.

Shovel with sharp edges will eliminate that saw thingamajig.

when walking light for your first walk around, take a small, “mini” hammer, or finishing hammer. Its only 6 inches long, very easy to carry when you are holding the metal detector and don’t want to lug all the big stuff around. You can do some digging with it, pound lath, hammer in brass tags, etc.

25ft tape
CaseXX Trapper pocket knife
Ideal mark marker
Roll of flagging
Orange vest
Davids sunflower seeds,…Then send rodman back to the truck for the locator, shovel, machete, hammer, lathe, saw, level rod, paint, pick, posthole digger and axe. Lol

Firearm, the region or area of work often determines the caliber.

My iPhone can pretty reliably get me within 30′ of a monument, often better.
The ongoing joke is my phone says it’s off 15′ so move it over there.
I take photos using my work issued Samsung Galaxy S7 which takes very high resolution photos.

My Bund NATO Entrenching tool/shovel goes with me most everywhere now. It cuts small limbs pretty well and digs better than any shovel I have ever used.

Okay, so basically you’re asking what I carry on my person in my vest on every project. That would be:
– iPhone 6 plus
– field book with 100% rag content pages,
– small drafting triangle that fits in field book,
– mechanical pencil with 0.5mm H lead,
– hand level,
– mylar eraser,
– Suunto Compass,
– Suunto Clinometer,
– Garmin eTrex GPS receiver,
– 12 ft. tape
– 3m tape (I think it is)
– allen wrenches for adjusting vials on prism poles, and
– roll of plastic flagging, -
Aside from the gps, pole and bipod
I’m carrying a metal detector, hammer and chisel
And maybe a can of paint
(at least for the initial reconnaissance)

Sharp eyes and an ever alert brain.
Plus all the usual paraphernalia listed here and not. -
@Kent : i’d like to see a picture of yourself in action.
I only have a folding ruler, some crayons and a phone with me.

We didn’t get out of the truck without our pouch which contains any mixture, or all of the following items:
-chisel hammer (great for digging, hammering or etching concrete)
-25′ tape (tenths/inches)
-flagging
-marking pen
-keel (lumber crayon)
-plumb bob
-nails
-tack ball (when doing layout/staking)

You have a Leatherman AND a good pocket knife. Apparently the former isn’t the latter.
______
And I only see one plumb bob listed. -
Well, @Larry Scott , thats what i carry, all the time. (and my 4″ pocket scale, in a belt pouch)
When i go surveying, i add a belt pouch, with pouches. Nails, mag hub nails, aluminium nails, plumb bob, flagging, and usually some other thing… Field book, folded worksheet, or drawing. Maybe a rr spk or 2, and a cotton spike. Pouch has hammer ring.

Apparently most of you can’t drive to where you are going. Geez. Who would want to walk that much?
