Graduates are facing the most intense scramble in a decade to get a job this summer, as a poll of employers reveals the number of applications for each vacancy has surged to nearly 70 while the number of available positions is predicted to fall by nearly 7%.The class of 2010 have been told to consider flipping burgers or stacking shelves when they leave university as leading firms in investment banking, law and IT are due to cut graduate jobs this year.
this in GB its worse here, the best forcast on improvement here is after 2016-2026,
vocational schooling is the way to go—most foreign nations are miles ahead of the US in business brain power, this trend will continue, there are no emerging markets in the US, NONE!!!

We’ve allowed the education establishment to convince us everyone has to go to college which is a mistake.
Wrong, Tedd. They need a college education now more than ever. How will anyone take them seriously in the food service industry without a college education. The equipment they use is so much more advanced than it was 20 years ago. Why if they do not have a college education, they will not get hired and definitely will not be considered professionals by the other learned professions like the beauticians and the guys at the corner store!!! I would not be surprised if soon they make a masters and continuing education mandatory to be allowed to run the fryer!
I agree GS. While there are real problems with opportunities for graduates, those who take TDDs advice will fall even further down the latter of opportunity. The way to go is to attend Community College and figure out what you want to do. Once you do that, attend a graduate school and move yourself to the top of the latter.
The secret to success is planning and the more education you receive the better your chances are.

🙂This is going to get interesting, revolution usually begins with the students.
Keeping those who read Robespierre and Orwell busy is crucial to maintaining status quo. Young men with too much time to think and no job to go to eventually foment a change.
We recently advertised for a Rod-man/Instrument-man, and had 111 applicants from all over the country. Of the group that HR sent to me for review, only 1 was not an LS.

GOOD JOB DOUCHE NOZZLE
Now why does that subject title sound exactly like something TDD would say…..oh, maybe it was.:-P
As Jimmy B. says…
they send you off to college, to gain a little knowledge, but all you want to do is learn how to score.

The best quote I can think of at the moment is:
“The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.” Robert Maynard Hutchins
Or perhaps:
“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”

“Ignorance is Bliss?”
so guess who gets the job offer? Probably the college grad! May be considered underemployed, but beats unemployed. No you don’t need a college degree to succeed in this country, but it certainly helps – even in down times, you’re more likely to land on your feet than non-degree holders are, which is certainly no less dismal of a situation.

YES IGNORANCE DOES ABOUND HERE–EG: 111 APPS FOR A ROD/INST MAN POSITION THAT PAYS 12-15 BUCKS AN HR TOPS–110 OF THEM LS’S
SHOWS TA GO YA, THAT THE BULLCRAP THE SURVEYORS SOCIETIES IN CAHOOTS WITH SOME LOCAL COLLEGE HAVE SUCKED HUNDREDS DRY WITH THE –GET MORE EDUCATION /MAKE THE BIG BUCKS MANTRA—THEY ARE SITTING HOME ON THEIR ASSES FILLING OUT APPLICATIONS FOR SOME NUMBNUTS COMPANY THAT WANTS THEM FOR 8 BUCKS AN HR–
I CAN’T EVEN GET LINO LAYED FOR UNDER 8 BUCKS A YARD AND THEIR ALL MESSY-KINS, MY PLUMBER CHARGES 125 AN HR AND IS BOOKED FOR 30 DAYS, MY GUTTER GUY CHARGES 5 BUCKS A FOOT, 65 BUCKS AN HR AND MILEAGE, MY MECHANIC CHARGES 110 BUCKS AN HR FOR LABOR, 40 BUCKS FOR AN OIL CHANGE–HOW MANY OF YOU ARE BARELY COVERING COSTS ??? MOST OF YOU IS THE CORRECT ANSWER–I TOLD YA 2 YRS AGO TO WAKE, UP FEW HAD–HOPE BOB MANLEY TOOK MY ADVICE 2 MONTHS AGO AND BOUGHT SILVER OVER 19 BUCKS YESTERDAY THAT WOULD HAVE MADE HIM 20-30 PERCENT PROFIT–EVEN GOLD AT 1232 DOLLARS AN OZ IS DOING GREAT–
I THINK OF ALL THESE POOR SAPS FLIPPING BURGERS HAVING TO FOREGO PAYING OFF THEIR 200-300,000 DOLLAR STUDENT LOAN TO GET THAT WORTHLESS EDUCATION–NO WE WON’T HAVE TO BE EDUMICATED TO WORK AT MC D’S JUST HAVE TO SET THE TIMER ON 3 MINUTES AND HIT THE RED BUTTON, WHEN IT BUZZES THE FRIES ARE DONE TO PERFECTION– AT BK THE FLAME BROILER IS MADE SO THE 45 SECOND RUN ON THE CONVEYOR PRODUCES THE PERFECT BURGER EVERYTIME, EVEN THE TOPPINGS ARE LAID OUT THAT A BLIND PERSON CAN DO THE JOB JUST AS EFFICIENTLY AS THE DOODLE-HEAD WITH THE MASTERS DEGREE-COMPLAIN AND THE BIF FAT POLICEMAN WILL ESCORT YOU OFF THE PREMISES OR TO THE LOCAL JAIL-THE ONLY DIFFERENCE I SEE IS THGE DOODLE-HEAD NEEDS THE PAYCHECK FOR HIS STARVING FAMILY, THE NUMBNUTS NEED THE PAYCHECK FOR DRUGS OR ALCOHOL TO ALLEVIATE THE FEELINGS OF A MUNDANE EXISTANCE—TDD

So, we are going to ignore the requirement that is now active in some states and soon will be the rule in all states, that all registered professional land surveyors have a college degree?
I’m not sure that I like that either, but that is what is what’s coming to our industry wheather we like it or not.Don’t Be Wasting Your Time Reading Foolish Posts……
your rant would appear to be more oriented towards the lower demand for surveying services vs. those of plumbers, mechanics, floor layers than it is towards college education. As you point out, those services appear to be in greater demand – this despite these vocations not requiring college educations to endeavor in. Surveying, whether or not it requires college education, is by & large (brutal honesty time) not that lucrative of a field, even in prosperous times when you look at the liability assigned vs. those vocations mentioned earlier; all the moreso in difficult economic times.

This has to be the dumbest post you’ve made…
Sure college isn’t for everyone, neither is Voc School… takes all kinds.I can’t imagine that a college degree has hurt anyone, and it sure has opened doors for most! By the way, I am one of those without a degree….except High School

Exactly Don. Get as much education as you can and continue doing so through out your life. It is a no brainer. This is not to say that you should go to school if you aren’t ready for various reasons or that you should go to a school that is not a good value.

TDDs posts are the best argument FOR further education.
