Which ones are they? 17 yr? 13 yr? Or some other kind? Cicadas are odd little fellas.

They look and sound different than any I have seen before. Those around here are lean and narrow, and instead of a slowly increasing noise, with discernible individuals, they start in mass each morning the sun shines, with an unrelenting monotone of space alien landing ship, B rated movie track sort of clamor, that seems to bounce off the very dome of the sky and turn the molecules of air to a frothy vibrating mass of madness.
There are two basic types of cicadas.
There is an annual cicada that has adults every year.
Then there are the periodical cicada's that have adults appear on some much longer schedule. The exact time period varies some.
There is a way to determine the periodical type from the annual type.
In this image* you can see a dark W shape near the end of the wing of the adult periodical cicada. The annual cicada does not have this dark W.
Hope that helps.
