"But to pose the question. Have none of you who work in rural settings not ever been wandering along and came upon a marijuana grow operation? They busted one in the TX panhandle, a county east of where I had been working, that had over 50,000 plants in it. And have none of you come across a portable meth lab? saw a thermos, gave it a kick, and then, realized just how stupid a mistake you made as it starts spewing crap everywhere? For those of you who do mortage surveys, have you not ever had to wonder about the house with the worn down pathway to the window at the back of the house, all the other windows covered in tinfoil? They usually got a big mean dog in the yard. And the neighbors are watching you very carefully!"

Looks like no one else has read this. However to answer the questions above all yes except meth. They are usually blown up already. 😎

We have been exceptionally lucky relative to such things. Not saying they aren't out there. Just lucky.

The tinfoil covered windows thing is really creepy, though, with one little opening with a set of eyes following your every move.

One of the first rural jobs I had when I started out on my own apparently had a marijuana growing operation just over the fence a ways. Before we got started on the field work the client asked very pointedly if we would have any need to cross that fence or wander out a hundred feet or so on the other side. I asked if we could get to everywhere we needed to go on his side of the fence and he said yes. Told him we would have no need, then, to go wandering onto the neighbor. He was relieved and then told us there was a "cash crop" over there and the neighbors tended to be very protective about that.

I have enough problems with pot and meth ops in the Piney Woods to travel across the state to learn about another thing to avoid. 🙂

Similar to yelling at the snakes that may or may not be in your immediate area to warn them of your impending entry into their territory."HEY YOU. MISTER SNAKE. MOVE. I'M COMING THROUGH."

That's a horrible idea. First, it tells everyone where you are and second, you just spent valuable ammo to let everyone know where you are. If someone is looking for a fight, and you're in the back country, you can never have enough ammo and I feel VERY confident that the people doing the escorting of whatever commodity they are transporting are better armed than I could be unless I was at my house.

Something about that old saying "You know what happens when a man looks for trouble? He generally finds it." rings in my head on this one.

Please excuse the bringing back an older thread, but for those that asked about the border violence, here is a news article that is supposed to be recent. I can't promise the accuracy of the article, except to say it fits with the way people around there behave. http://www.breitbart.com/texas/2017/07/11/los-zetas-cartel-rpg-military-style-arsenal-found-near-texas/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social
