Last year the tomato crop was commin' on strong and all of a sudden upstate NY got some kind of blight and the crop crashed!! Looks like the same thing is going to happen this year with all the rain we have had. I have a huge crop all at once and wonder if anyone has a recipe for freezing the tomato, heard you can chop into quarters and just put in the freezer, till you want them in Feb.
Has anyone had the blight hit yet???
All four of our plats are doing poorly. Some with spots, some that are splitting before maturing, many are very small for their variety. We (in west central Iowa) got the blight early on and even after treating it they did not do well. That and the fact we planted them in the same place as last year - someone told me to plant them someplace else each year and not use the same space for tomatos again for three years. Haven't seen too many bugs on them, so don't think that was the problem.
A couple BLT's and about a dozen jars of salsa so far from what we thought still looked good enough to eat.
Now, the cucumbers grew like crazy this year.
Actually you can freeze them whole if you like. Here is a good website on how to do it.
Thanks Mr. Locke, saw that link and did exactly that for the rest of the afternoon!!! Looks like it should work just fine and I will probably do it again until the blight takes hold...last year I remember having a bunch commin' along just fine. The neighbors crop had crashed and it wasn't long and mine did too. This year I moved the 'mater crop about 50 ft. away and so far so good. We have had huge rain and heat this year....weeds love it, wheat doesn't. Lots of good hay, and corn...beans are just humungus!!!
