Interesting that you posted this in regards to Krazy Kat.
I recent read an interesting article with a local author of a new book about Krazy Kay and its creator George Harriman who was born in New Orleans in the late 19th century.
Besides explaining how popular and wild in content Krazy Kay was and the influence that it had on Charles Schultz, Walt Disney, Robert Crumb and many other cartoonist. Besides being the originof all cat&mouse, car&dog etc cartoons.
But the most interesting thing was that Krazy Kat never would have become popular if Herriman didn't hide his racial/ethnic origin. He assumed and presented and passed himself off as a "white" to open doors. He was actually of NewOrleans Creole of color ancestry (family moved to L.A.when he was young)and legally would have been considered "negro or colored" and all the segregated and racist issues attached to that.
