I caught a trojan (named "AntiSpy Safeguard") and just got thru fighting it for half a day.
Would not even boot in regular Windows XP, had to use safe mode. Computer did not remember how to get on line or how to make disk images, etc., even after following instructions for how to remove the trojan. Could not run Avast or Malware Bytes.
Finally, I just decided to restore a registry from a month ago. Booted up great, ran right, so I could run Avast and Malware Bytes to get rid of it.
Restoring an old registry has saved my butt many times; I recommend saving them for this purpose.
Granted, you will lose registry setting you have made since last save, but does no changes to files.
This is a clean little app that will save them for you.
I have had luck by putting superantispyware and avira antivirus and antimaleware on a thumb drive.
I had that or something like it on my xp about a month ago and it locked me out of programs on my c drive.
It is also helpful to set your computer for restoring to an earlier time when all your settings worked properly.
