A quick search in Indeed reveals there are roughly, 60 Land Surveyor positions open within 200 miles of the St. Louis area.
Yesterday the MO board sent out their quarterly newsletter. The last decade shows that the number of PLS are down 6%, while all other professions (PE, PLA, A) are up, to the tune of 17% in the last decade on average...
We have have a total of 860 Professional Land Surveyors in the State of Missouri as of the end of 2017.?ÿ
At the firm where I draw a check, we are running 4 weeks out before we can begin a new project.?ÿ

I will never believe the "surveyor shortage" myth. However I do believe there is a shortage of surveyors willing to work for sub par-wages for engineers and architects and developers who are accustomed to paying shit for fees simply because they had the convenience of being able to shop us around and treat us like whores.
I am of the opinion that we HAD far too many surveyors & what we are all experiencing now is a reshuffling of the deck to where it should be.
And this stuff about being 4 weeks out I can only hope to god that you are charging more money. I am not the cheapest guy on the block and I don't want to be and I am not the most expensive guy on the block but I want to be.
I want the client to whimper when I give a price. I charge a lot more when I am super busy.
As for those ads, I greatly admire that wise Greek philosoper Kevin Costner who so wisely said thousands of years ago; Pay them and they will come.
Pay people more money and they will see some value in becoming a surveyor.
And this stuff about being 4 weeks out I can only hope to god that you are charging more money...I keep going up and up...doesn't matter.
I agree that the bloat is over. Unfortunately, slim is creeping back up. Those 200 dollars mortgage inspection firms that are owned by individuals that aren't even licensed are showing up again..

And no, we don't do MTI. We don't even to residential work, zero private work.?ÿ

If those firms doing 200 dollar surveys are in violation of the law or board rules turn them.
It wasn't too many years ago where I live that a couple of local surveyors were actually enabling and assisting unlicensed practice. They would turn a blind eye to it and because they were "some good old boy" it was condoned. I took a low opinion of that and began reporting the unlicensed practice to the board.
Hell one of these jackasses had actually made up his own engineering and surveyor stamp and was posing as one of the local small towns as a professional engineer and they were enabling him as well. "Oh he is just making some money he means no harm".
A number of deeds referred to his fraud surveys.
And lets not even discuss the party chiefs with limited experience moonlighting. Heck in the county north of me there are numerous surveys with a Tennessee stamp. It was damned bad around here and while it has gotten better it has a long way to go especially in the money department.?ÿ
