I don't get it. Are all of the different "Bonds" (Connery, Moore, Brosnan, Craig, etc.), supposed to be the same guy? Or is James Bond agent 007's cover name?

I am just wondering if the different actors mean a reset of the story telling (I know at least Craig must be, seeing as how they restarted with Casino Royal).

I assume he supposed to be the same person.

You have to suspend reality a little.

The bad guys some how build massive diabolical projects undetected but upon eventual detection James Bond single-handedly blows them up.

The bad guys are generally competent (obviously they were able to build highly complex and expensive structures and vessels) up until James Bond gets involved then they fall apart. They can't shoot for one thing. The chief bad guy usually has an opportunity to kill James Bond but elects to set him up on a machine which will eventually kill Bond then they leave. Naturally Bond always escapes.

James Bond kicks bad guy backside and looking good the whole time he's doing it and finding spare time to seduce the various attractive young women present.

You have to suspend reality A LOT.

And don’t forget George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.

Rich

What do you thinks accounts for the bad guys becoming totally incompetent once James Bond shows up?

Is it they know who James Bond is and their morale just goes in the toilet and they can't do anything right after that?

Rich

I think they are too arrogant to believe that they could make a mistake.

Basic Proverbs 16:18 "First pride, then the crash— the bigger the ego, the harder the fall." How often it is true. Even in Bond films. Bond starts with a big ego and makes stupid mistakes gets caught, the bad guy makes even more egotistical mistakes and falls farther. All James Bond is a life lesson.

Who cares about Bond?

I'm more interested in the Bond girls. The replacement MoneyPenny is hot, Carey Lowell is always attractive, but Danielle Bianchi is probably the hottest of them all.

When you've got Pussy Galore, who cares about anything else?

In the novels, he is the same person, born around 1920 or so, having served in WWII. He's got a family history (mother, father aunts, etc.), a housekeeper and eventually a son (from an affair with Kissy Suzuki). The "00" means his is authorized to kill without prior authorization from his superiors, presumably the "7" means he was the seventh agent to be so authorized.

In the movies, he is generally (except for the first "Casino Royale") considered to be the same person, as can be seen by looking at glimpses of his "personal history" (i.e., friends such as Felix Leiter,MI associates ("M", "Q", Moneypenny) and his wife Tracy who died and is referred to several times in later movies.)

He also has souveniers and memories of meeting past villans, who were met by different Bond actors. Lazenby makes a reference to "the other guy" at the beginning of his film, but it is never explained, and may just have been a jibe at Connery, who had refused to continue in the role.

The latest Bond movie with Daniel Craig has updated his backstory, having him be about 40 years old in the present, which would put his birthdate in the late 60's.

This is sort of what I was referring to.

Even if all of the others were supposed to be the same, the whole series has been reset with the new Casino Royal.
