I attended a conference on "cloud computing" today. Perhaps you should look into that Wendell. Let the "cloud people" deal with your infrastructure. As to your choice of php.. well you already have my opinions on that.

During a break I was heading outside for a smoke and dang if there wasn't some geo type conference going on with all kind of booths setup. They all had "geo...something" in their names and of course I had to break out my extrovert nature and parle' (parlay). I did meet a younger lad on another break who was involved with GIS attending the other conference. He goes to talking with my bud while I was talking another feller (former Marine). I heard the word "lidar" and that got my attention straight up. My buddy points to me and starts bragging about me being a former land surveyor and such. When our new-found friend tries to tell him what "LiDAR" stands for I just couldn't hold my tongue. I didn't bust his bubble too much and he was quick to realize he was out gunned to talk to me about it or anything surveying related. He tried to back me down by dropping NGS names - who I already knew. I mentioned OPUS and post-processing and he was lost. (not that I wouldn't be as well on a lot of it)

In any event, I found it neat that I got to meet a bunch of strangers completely unrelated to my conference at hand. Seems like most of the "geo" folks were mostly actual earth work folks - flood control, erosion, basement water remediation, etc.
The one young lad said "Quantum Spatial" on his name-tag-leash thing. Anyone ever head of them? He said they still have a few survey crews around but they are going towards a strictly GIS and photogrammetry type stuff environment in their work.
I didn't bother to bring the UAV/drone issue. He might have exploded right in front of me!

I don't reckon it hurts a hermit too much and get out once in a while.
