The news from the south shore of Long Island seems to get worse each day. It's like one of the CSI/Criminal Intent shows on TV, except this is real.
Back on December 11, a Suffolk County police officer doing a training exercise with a cadaver dog found the remains of a woman in a wooded area near Gilgo Beach, a barrier island on the south shore of Long Island.
The police had been searching for months for a young Craigslist “escort”, Shannan Gilbert, who had disappeared May 1. She was last seen with a client in nearby Oak Beach when she stormed out of his house and disappeared, and her disappearance triggered a search which led to additional training runs. (Police say the client has been cleared.)
Two days later, three more sets of remains were found within a quarter-mile of the first. Like the first body, they had been wrapped in burlap and left unburied on the north side of the road. As it turned out, all four women had advertised on the Internet as “escorts” prior to their deaths, but police are sure none of the bodies was Gilbert, as her family had provided DNA to compare.
Last Tuesday, finding of a fifth cadaver caused investigators make another full-scale search as well as other clues into what has become an ongoing serial killer investigation
Today, the remains of three more bodies were found in the Gilgo Beach area, less than a mile from the first group, bringing the number bodies discovered to eight. None of the first five is Gilbert......the police are working to identify the rest.

With That Conclusion.......
I used to want to be a homicide detective back in the day. Then I decided I wanted to go to the FBI and hunt serial killers. Key word "hunt". Then I fell into electronics, computer science, mathematics and physics. I forgot about that stuff for a long time. Then I run into a book called "Whoever Fights MOnsters" authored by one of founders of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit (BSU). (circa late 80s). I managed fine until about chapter 9. I had only read part of that chapter the night before and pondered what profile I might come up with on my drive to work the next morning. Chapter 1 and the preface warns of getting into these minds lest you become psychotic as well. That night I finished off chapter 9 and my little profile was drop-dead spot on. I couldn't believe it and was quite freaked out to be honest. I put the book away after that. I realized I had gotten into the guy's head and was knowing what he was thinking. Super freaking scary I tell ya. No thank you!!
I remember a single page with a small quote from Neitschze (sp?) before the preface. It says "remember when you stare into the abyss that it is staring back at you".
We watch Dexter too.
We are into the second season.
Have to wonder where it is going?

I realize this is a horrible tragedy unfolding, and don't want to make light of it.
But I still couldn't suppress the urge to say "Call the Hardy Boys. It's right in their back yard (Bayport)." Some of the older folks here probably read those books as kids. I read all 42 or however many had come out by the time I graduated.
With That Conclusion.......
Well that explains a lot! 😉
