PETA shouldn't worry.?ÿ No pigeons were killed, only humans.?ÿ And it was in 1812.?ÿ The place was so named based on an abundance of carrier pigeons in the area.
Had never heard of this historic event until last evening.?ÿ I had sent a packet of information to a friend about a portion of his relatives who lived over 100 years ago.?ÿ He has done a ton of research on his large family but had come up short on this one branch.?ÿ He called to thank me and then the story telling session began that I thoroughly enjoyed.?ÿ We discussed the Battle of Beecher Island in 1868 where a brother of one his great-grandfathers was a participant, for example.?ÿ Then he asked if I knew anything about the Pigeon Roost Massacre.?ÿ One skinny little branch of his family tree was living in Pigeon Roost, Indiana when the massacre took place.?ÿ This is in far southeastern Indiana.?ÿ He added there was another local family with ties to the massacre and most of those killed were relatives of theirs.?ÿ His family and the other local family took very different routes to end up living less than a mile apart today.
Wondering if anyone here had heard of this massacre.

But somebody needs to fix the coordinates that site gives, as they are seriously screwed up.
Indiana gov site:?ÿ https://www.in.gov/history/markers/12.htm
Good catch on the bad lat/long. The site says 38.32 and -86.70 when the true location is closer to 38.60 and -85.77. That is a huge error.

It was in Africa, so my change is an improvement, but apparently still not quite on.

The center of the shaded area for the site is about 38.616300 and -85.774449 A little rounding shouldn't hurt
