Katie Uhlaender is near the top of the leader board in the skeleton competition in Sochi. She lists McDonald, Kansas as her hometown. McDonald is a wide spot in the road on Highway 36 about 35 miles from Colorado and 20 miles from Nebraska. The 2010 population was 160. Kids in that area attend school about 10 miles further west in Bird City, the home town of Mrs. Cow.
Katie's father, Ted, played in the big leagues from '65 to '72 and then worked as a scout. He died on his ranch not far from McDonald a few years ago. Katie has his 1972 ring for being with the Reds when they won the National League Pennant that year. She wears it around her neck when she races.
