you go through the grocery store check line to choruses of various first names and the horrible things they did or rumors floating around.
In Smalltown USA, entire conversations are held using only first names and everyone knows the intended person every time.
Max and Janie took Sharon when they went to the festival. They saw Ernie, Pete, Chuck and Betty while there. They stopped at Donnie's on the way home to drop off a treat for Nancy. Donnie told them Kelly and Kaitlyn had gone coon hunting, not your standard mother-daughter night out. Marion didn't go because Maxine had a water leak in the front yard of her new home so he had to call Michael and Darrin to help. Darrin was late getting there as he had taken Marion and Marcella with him to the Farmer's Market all day and had left his pager at home by mistake. Elmer and Wayne happened to drive past Maxine's while the repair work was underway so stopped by to tell the workers everything they were doing wrong. Warren told them to get on their way or he'd clobber them with the backhoe bucket. Jean and Leon had arrived to calm Maxine and laughed hard at Warren's threat.

Hints that he's from Kansas. Past reference to Mrs. Cow like we used to see in re Mrs. Digger. Indications that he owns or runs a business and has been in business for quite a while. Same writing style and wry sense of humor.
But then, I've been wrong a couple of times myself.

Knew a fellow named Will who swore he had a twin brother named Way. Claimed that everyone knows that "where there's a Will, there's a Way." He also reported that he stayed out of the military because of the potential hazard when the squad leader would yell "fire at Will."
