Would anyone have any recommendations for a new wide format printer? I've been using the HP CP1700 for about a decade in my office, and its slowly dying. Looking for something with dual trays (8.5x11 & 11x17) and can print color and can handle frequent use. Been looking at reviews for all sorts of wide format printers and they all look like they could be good or bad. I appreciate any suggestions!
Thanks,
Matt
I bought an HP 7500A Wide Format unit in August and it seems to be okay as far as doing scans, printing, etc. It only has a USB A & B hookup, and I can't seem to be able to find out whether there is a Parallel or Serial cable from the computer ports to the B port on the All In One unit and if this type of connection will work with the unit. The colors seem good when printing USGS Quads and the linework is also clear. I had a little trouble doing the initial setup, but HP Tech Support did a great job working me through it and everything works as it supposed to.
Matt,
I just bought a Brother MFC 6490CW printer, and I really like it. It has impressed me so far, and some of the posters here on this forum have found extremely cheap refill cartridges for it.

Everyone seemed to like it that replied to my post above. I scanned an 11x17 map out of the state topo book that I have at the office, and the scan quality was amazing.
I really like the auto document feeder, and the software seems pretty straightforward.
I've only had it about three weeks. but seem to like it so far.

I have a Brother like this:
Professional Series MFC-6490CW color inkjet All-in-One
Everyday use for about 1 year so far without any problems.
edit: Blake and the others posted while I was typing and I also have a 6490CW for 11x17 color work and it's been an awesome little bugger.
I removed all the crap I wrote about the Canon, I jumped the shark and wrote about my horrendous experience with Canon's 36" plotter family. Stay far, far away from those!!!
Matt,
I forgot to mention, I ordered mine from Staples (refurbished), for $149, and it qualified for free, next day shipping. I ordered it Thursday afternoon, and it was on the doorstep Friday afternoon before I got in from the field.

I also forgot to mention that HP had a promotion deal on when I purchased mine. It was normally listed at $249.00, but for the promotion it was $149.00. It was too good of a deal to pass up. I more or less got it for a backup for when my HP R80 quits. I have had the R80 for 12 years and it has been a workhorse. I have only had to replace the drive belt in it about 3 years ago.
HP still every once in awhile offers them at the $149.00 price. You just have to check their site.
I have been very happy with my HP 7780 AIO. Does everything and does a good job of it.
8.5" and 11x14" trays, not sure if ot will do 11x17".
Thank you all so much for such quick feedback! My only concern with the "all-in-one" deal is that my boss, our secretary, and I all have "all-in-one" printers at our work stations, so I hate to end up with another scanner, unless that ends up being the best way to go. Again, thank you for the advice, I"m looking into the Brother now.
HP has a 7000 printer only that will do up to 13"x19". No, fax, scan, copy, just a printer only.
Matt,
I was telling a buddy of mine about the Brother printer I bought, and saw that Staples now has it on sale (refurbished model) for $99. I called, and they issued me a refund for the difference between what I paid and the sale price.
Needless to say, now I'm even more pleased!
