We have a 1935 house in Carmichael in escrow. Very cool house, I found it. We looked at it. Decided not to make an offer. Couple of months later wife decides she really wants this house. Okay we are able to qualify before selling current house (apparently contingent offers are not favored in our RE market).
So I'm working on getting house ready to list. ?ÿThe 50 year old wallpaper in the kitchen was ON there, it took a lot of steam to get it off the walls. ?ÿThree layers of wallpaper, Mrs. Fowler really liked wallpaper. The stuff in the dining room was glued directly to the wallboard, no paint, no primer, they added two more layers the last being the fuzzy gold stuff. I hired a painter to deal with that room.
On to the gas...the floor guys disconnected the gas range and reconnected it, no problem. I'm surprised they did that due to liability reasons. Gas connectors should not be reused. I've been painting the room. I got to the wall with the refrigerator and range. I moved them out of the way, painted the wall then went to Home Depot and got a new gas connector. Brought the range back over this morning and connected. Couldn't get rid of the gas smell. ?ÿThought I got it by tightening then it came back. Check all the connections again with soap solution, no bubbles. So went to hardware store, get another connector.
Second time I changed the adapter (3/8" flare to 1/2" flare) on the range to the new one. I put gas tape on the male threads being careful to no put tape on the flare seat. Then I installed the second new connector, turn on the gas, no leaks. Smell is gone.
So I don't know what happened, whether the connector from Home Depot is defective or it didn't seat well with the old adapter I later changed. ?ÿI didn't do anything different at the wall end, just screwed it on and tightened it.
Pretty much back to the wallpaper again?
You know they have custom wallpaper services nowadays. You can just send them a file and they'll print it out into a wall size image.
The breakfast nook could be covered in your favorite Spanish Land Grant. ?ÿ
Gas smell back this morning. Got a gas leak detector at Home Depot, it definitely works (open a burner without lighting it and the thing went nuts). Can't find any leaks. None of the fittings I installed detect gas. None of the burners either (assuming a valve isn't closing).
For a nominal fee any plumber should be able to quickly disconnect your gas meter and install a pressure gauge with a valve stem shunt.?ÿ After pressuring up the system it will be readily evident whether there's a leak or not.?ÿ Some states actually require this as a test for occupancy.
Don't take this as serious advice, but recently I went to my favourite cafe back home and while standing there waiting for a Flat White I got a couple of wiffs of gas. So when she handed me the coffee I asked if they cooked on gas, she replied yes, so I said I thought I could smell gas, at which she promptly disappeared into the kitchen calling "check the gas", while I disappeared for good, fearing an explosion. I did wonder afterwards whether it was a smell from another similar source, like a toilet vent or other.
Don't take this as serious advice either...but folks (like me) that went looking for a gas leak with a Bic lighter...and found one...probably won't ever do it again.
I won't.
ps - it can take months for eyelashes to grow back.
This is an LG (Large Garbage) free standing range/oven. ?ÿAfter watching some videos it dawned on me that I could pull the burner caps and flame spreaders and test the gas jets below easily. Right burners nothing, middle griddle burner detects yellow, left front detected yellow, left rear nothing, rechecked left front nothing, rechecked center griddle burner yellow.
so either the griddle burner valve isn't closing or there is a leak under there.
We had no trouble with this range before. I needed to move it for painting and I didn't want to drag it across the new floor so I tilted it up on my hand truck and maybe caused a leak. Seems kind of delicate if you can't move a range.
Dumped an LG refrigerator after failing at 4.5 years. Will never buy another LG.
I once knew a Belgium trainee doctor who said that she and the others sometimes did ambulance volunteering, for experience. The first time she went out they attended a couple who had survived (barely) blowing their yacht up, with themselves in it, by looking for, and finding, a gas leak with a box of matches. Only needed one match. From her description of the injuries, I'm sure it would have removed any wallpaper.?ÿ
My first boss "mentored" me on various home improvement projects (I was in my early 20s). Installed a gas line to new gas dryer. He told me to check for leaks with a lighter LOL. Which I did, no leaks, thank god.?ÿ
Look on the bright side honey, wallpaper is gone, and the drywall, and the cabinets, and everything else.
Rats, I thought this post was about Holy Cow.?ÿ?ÿ ??ÿ
I love it! The perfect way to start off the week by LMAO. Thanks Bud!

Again Dave, sorry for the hijack. I'm an ol' fart that seems to always go off tangent to the original post.?ÿ ? ?ÿ

"check for leaks with a lighter"
I am pretty sure the rule is 'always test for a gas leak with an open flame.'
Or was it 'never'?
This 'always' and 'never' thing is so confusing.
No, I am pretty sure this is an 'always'.
"check for leaks with a lighter"
?ÿ
?ÿ
Yea, but toss the lighter (sparklers work better) at the suspected leak. The worst that can happen is you might be hairless for a few months.?ÿ ??ÿ
I didn't say I wasn't young and dumb once upon a time.
I'm old and dumb now.
Ordered the new valve (can't get it locally), will arrive tomorrow. Hopefully that fixes it. The only way I get a reading is to put the sensor right on top of the gas jet. It is very slow, not enough to light. The internet advises a new valve is the fix.
I could put soap on it but reluctant to do do that, might clog it. The jet is a brass part with a pinhole, it sits horizontally in there.
I had to laugh when I saw the commercial for the wallpaper company. Aside from your wallpaper posts, I don't think I know anyone else that does wallpaper. ?ÿPretty cool you can send them any file and they'll make wallpaper from that.?ÿ

Let us know the name of the Hospital you are going to be in so we can send flowers or bourbon.?ÿ ??ÿ
