I came up with a metric last month to determine the status of a Dog:
A real dog is one that could be placed in the back of a pickup without someone claiming it to be animal cruelty. I am not sure how to quantify those cat equivalent pets that could not be placed in the backs of pickup trucks.
(My parents have 3 of the undefined creatures. Collectively, I call them Cerebrus.)
