I got a bunch more books to feed my Napoleonic period reading habit. One non-fiction biography of a R.N. Captain who is the model for Aubrey of the Aubrey-Maturin series and also Hornblower. Also got 4 from the first series of the genre written in the 1840s by a retired R.N. Captain who had first hand experience of the period.

Just got back from the inlaws. At least this year there was very little crying and yelling. Grandma gave us a nice big tray of cookies. We also got some framed pictures (3) of my wife's sister's family that I guess we're supposed to put up at least when they come to visit.

I just got back from the in-laws too but I didn't see you there?
My mother-in-law is a talented cook but it's funny she doesn't believe me. I don't know what she does to that roast of beef but it's damn good.

We didn't have to bring anything but a couple of bottles of cheap wine. Our niece likes to cook so she made the ham and I don't know who made the lasagna, peas, sweet potatoes, salad, pies, but it was all good. They had a new kitten so that was fun torturing the poor thing with ribbon tied on her tail and such. She didn't seem to hold it against any one of us personally.
I got something really cool!
No so-called "presents" in American Christmas retail parlance, but much LOVE--- In the form of communications from family and friends and people whom I have worked with around the world. We always seek each other out at this time of the year, and just a few words spoken between us by any means available, and in whatever language is mutually understood, is more joy to me than anything else could ever possibly be.
