I saw an ad in a local buy/sell/trade publication from someone selling file cabinets.
I called and asked if they were legal or letter size. I talked to an obviously young woman (you can tell they are young by the way they talk--like a text message) and she told me she didn't know the difference between letter and legal. So I explained it to her and she still couldn't comprehend the concept. She didn't offer to measure it or help in any way to determine the size. Since she was in a town 30 minutes away I just thanked her for her time and we said goodbye.
Here's hoping she never breeds.
Let's see. Are there illegal file cabinet sizes? (gum snap) Are you talking about the letter of the law?

If it was 30 minutes north of you, and she was old enough to figure out how to use a phone, chances are you're too late on the whole "hoping she never breeds" thing 😉
She did not know if they were Legal, or Illegal.
So what?
🙂

There's also lateral file cabinets (where file folders are side by side instead of front to back) - some have drawers where you can move the rails to handle either type of hanging file folder.

yeah, but those are the ones that are most fun to practice with!
You better not be cracking on Martinsburg!!!
The impression I got from her limited descriptive skills was that they were traditional style, not laterals. But you never know...

Well, it was 30 minutes south, but the same principle applies there too.
Dennis,
A little off point, but it's too bad you don't have a VA state (commonwealth) surplus "depot" near you. I've picked up drafting tables, random tables, legal size file cabinets, etc. at a fraction of the cost of new, or even typically used stuff. Look for lawyers retiring or offices closing for file cabinets. I'd LOVE to have a flat file drawer for dad's old plats, but I'm NOT going to buy a new one.
Good luck on your search.
I bet some of you employ survey techs who don't know the difference between legal and letter paper also...

funny!
I still find it quite odd that some office store still supply "Ledger" size paper. I mean what other industry/profession still uses it? Drafting and engineering and courthouse copies is about the only time I see it.
File Cabinets????
Is that like a disk drive? Because I know all my files are on one.

Outstanding!
I was in Staples shopping for a few of those handy/personal file carry plastic boxes with a handle on top for this last year and the next couple of years worth of statements and tax records for storage.
Was told Staples would not have any legal size media files and they were being discontinued. Thought that odd.
Quill has them, so not all is lost.
