Truth is often stranger than fiction. A brief backstory: A very short few years ago, Bob tried to sell his small building to the County (as they were renovating an old hotel next door-$4 million renovation) for a fair price (in my opinion) but was turned away. Then a year or so later, the county makes a low offer, which Bob refuses. The county in this case is what I call the elected board of commissioners. The next thing you know that little building was critical to the hotel project and the county tries eminent domain. Bob prevailed and the county was embarrassed. I forgot to mention... Bob is the county Manager! That's correct. The board members are his direct bosses. Weird, huh? Bob called me today, in his official capacity, to negotiate an easement on part of my property for a bridge I'm not in favor of (that they will have to take by eminent domain) He's supposed to bring a set of plans and meet me at the bridge (just off the end of my driveway) at 7:30 in the morning. I hope he doesn't bring deputies. Any true Southern Gentleman would be quite insulted by that, me thinks.

An easement for a bridge? I have never heard of an easement for a bridge. I have heard of them for all manner of utilities and drives, etc. But never a bridge.

Sounds like this fella is trying to short you out of a lot of money that could be better handled by the person who stands to gain or he who benefits from the easement giving you a wheelbarrow load of money for you to sell some land to him.

Momma didn't raise no fool and nothing is free when you can get a lot of money for it.

As for you being a gentleman, well we have never met so I suppose you may be one. You're definitely southern though.

Edit: I try to avoid being characterized as a gentleman as that would raise the bar far too high for me to maintain.?ÿ

The restroom door said "Gentlemen" but I used it anyway.

Always get a written offer before calling an Attorney. After that base the fee on how much the offer goes up...

Stacy, there has been a lot of misuse and abuse of eminent domain by elected officials, lawyers and judges. Eminent Domain cannot be the first option but rather the last and it cannot be used when there is another perfectly reasonable alternative and it cannot be used before good faith efforts to buy the property have been attempted.

A lot of these people go straight to threats and intimidation as the first option and that does not make for good relations.

I would not grant an easement for a bridge simply because I would loose use of my property. I would sell the land for a hefty price.

I wonder who stands to gain from construction of the bridge??ÿ
