I hate it when I receive a message that appears to be from someone I know but isn't. It is too easy to open the message without giving it too much thought until it is too late.
I'm not sure who was trying to get to me today but the message appeared to be from our ol' buddy, Jim Petty, operator of the Roadkill Cafe, down in Arkansas. Jim hasn't chipped in much, if any, since Surveyor Connect came along but was very active 10-15 years back on a prior board.
The actual connection was to something known as ghostforestproject. I didn't open it, but a check of what ghostforestproject involves led to a discovery of some band from Minnesota. I do not buy music so there would be no financial gain to communicating with me.
My wife got a message at work recently which purported to be from her boss wanting some bank account details for an electronic transfer.
Actual first names were used correctly and apparent email addresses were correct.
But he had not sent the message and, if she had replied, the message would have headed off into the ether.
It is similar to what is the scam described here
Be careful out there
