CDA to Orofino:
It has been a while since I traveled in the state of N. Idaho (1980's) extensively, so take this with a grain (or two) of salt & a bunch of tequila.
If you travel on 95 to Lewiston and 12 to Orofino - it is pretty scenery (and some good fishing during steelhead season), but more than a trip or two becomes boring.
Take the back highways thru St. Mary's (actually spelled Maries), etc. It will take longer, but it is breathtaking. Besides, as you stop in some of the back-water logging towns, you will meet many examples of what generations of in-breeding can produce. Take your camera and enjoy!!!
I usually preferred the Lochsa route unless it was a drinking road-trip or in the winter.

That's funny... just today I was trying to figure out where Orofino, ID is in relation to other cities out there (I've never been) in relation to semi-major airports, as a good friend of mine from high school (in WV) is the Assistant County Prosecutor for Clearwater County.
I've never heard of Orofino, ID before today and now I've seen it mentioned twice... now that's just odd.
Carl
Definitely Lochsa!
That's the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. Now what's really freaky is that you'll probably hear or see this mentioned somewhere else.
Brian and Kurt-
thanks for the feedback-
we took CDA/ St Maries on the way down Friday afternoon- I'd thought I'd make a bit of time having interstate and MT 28 for some of the route as opposed to rhe slow trip around flathead following RV's, etc. that was a pretty casual drive and nice scenery- Mrs. File hasn't been thru that area at all so it was all new to her. only had one delay for construction -as they were chipping out towarda small town called Harvard.
Sunday afternoon we head headed home up US 12/ Clearwater/ Lochsa- also very pretty - literally hundreds of people floating the river. Some smoke from the fires, but not too bad. definately better that my previous trips that way which had gererally been in 1/4Ts or gamma goats on the way to and from Gowen Field, Id. It was 6.5 hrs each way plus stops for supper.
good vacation. 🙂
