One of my wife's acquaintances from the hair-dresser's place bought some land not long back.?ÿ After some fancy footwork I was able to convince her and her husband I was retired and really didn't have the means to "survey" their new land purchase.?ÿ I later heard 'through the grapevine' they had paid a lot more for the survey than they had anticipated.?ÿ I'm sure they felt a better deal could have been had if I had done the survey for them.
Oh well, I'd have rather not done the survey anyway...BUT..Today I get a work order from the electric co-op for a new line to be placed for new home construction.?ÿ Guess whose name is on the work order??ÿ
Now I get to prepare all the easement docs for the property owner's signatures.?ÿ I'm sure they will recognize my name.?ÿ I guess my "cover" of being retired will be outed.?ÿ I can't help but think I'm gonna come out the 'rat' in this deal.
I'm not too worried.?ÿ I don't go the same hairdresser anyway.?ÿ 😉
I had a hand me down client come to me several years ago wanting me to be a witness in court on a dispute between two major Aholes of this area.
He came to me with the problem a few years earlier and I told him to build a new fence where the boundary had been marked with tpost along the blazed, hacked and painted boundary and that he did.
Told him that I don't take up the effort to fight boundary battles unless there is some serious money being placed in my hand.
He backed away as I knew he would as he is willing to spend a mild fortune on something for him and never spends any to help himself out of a jam.
His cousin was his attorney and he probably had to take the case as payback as he is indebted. His indebtedness later cost him his license to practice law and his seat in congress.
On their big day in court, I was caught coming out of a courtroom by him and cousin attorney and he quickly came over and wanted to know why I had not stepped up to help him with his case while I was helping others with their case.
Had to shut him down real fast and told him the truth, "I'm not here representing anyone on a boundary suit, my clients are a family that included about 80+ members spread from one coast to the other and all of them showed up today to probate and agree on the division of the property and they insisted that I be there and show them around their grandparents homeplace later that day".
These people were older than me and this was their first time in Texas.

Grab a tight-lipped buddy and take him along on the field work.?ÿ If they see you simply point out how you had to show him the ropes as he is the new guy.?ÿ Having your name on the paperwork doesn't mean you did the hard part.
this reply and the speed at which it was posted would lead some to believe this is not your first rodeo.....

Well Buddy, after hangin' around this joint for 10+ years I honestly believe you (of all people) have the wherewithal to weasel outta this unblemished slicker than a newborn calf. ?????ÿ

Don't let us down.
Reminds me of a time when I set up an appointment to meet with a client at a place a couple of miles from his project.?ÿ We had a great chat.?ÿ Sort of like "old home week".?ÿ Talked about seventeen different subjects that had nothing to do with the project.?ÿ When he returned home he discovered his survey was done.?ÿ Dang it!!!!!! He had wanted to follow along on every step and now he had missed it all.
I just tell people my Government job has a rule against me doing any private work.?ÿ It isn't strictly prohibited but there's got to be some incompatibility.?ÿ The government jargon is "incompatible activities."

Sometimes it's best to be at arm's length. Doing work for friends puts you in a tight spot if something pops up.
Luckily I got in and out of there last week in "ninja survey mode".?ÿ My name only shows up in one place out of 4 sheets that the property owners sign.

One more hurdle and I'm home free... 😉
