I suspect you're looking at a 1957 photograph through a 2015 lens.
Then again I bought a copy of 50 Shades of Grey thinking it was a textbook on the zone system

That is the retractable prism pole. It never caught on.
Because they are working on the west shore line of Lake Michigan in Chicago. The nearest buildings to the east are in Michigan, a loooooooooooong way away and too far if you believe the Earth is somewhat round instead of flat.
It's just a hair to the left of center, too.

Well Dave, I tried to get through all that. I tend to get lost in wondering what in the heck they're doing, let alone the poor yahoo taking the photo op for his 30 seconds of fame in 1957. I was only 2.04 yrs then and I think borderline pooping in my pants. Worked for me I suppose, but I did eventually figure it out by hockey season.
Still good stuff and thanks for sharing. Now my mind is more full of stuff from the picture I can forget I didn't remember.... 😉
