This close to campus the 'hood is full of college kids. There's only about three of us on the block that own where we live. The rest are transient scholars.

Not that that's a bad thing. If I can't stand a neighbor, it will only be a year or two before they're gone. It works out.

One of the housefuls of undergrads that dot my neighborhood has a dog that infrequently runs free. It's really only when they get home and open the front door and the dog runs out the front door, pees, sniffs the car tires and then returns to the porch at the owner's urging. And the owner calls him by name. I've always thought it a little odd, but the dog's name is "Uncle Larry". It took me a while to decipher what they were calling him, but I finally picked it up. Sometimes they just call him "Unk". And the few times he's wandered over toward my yard, I've called him by name and he comes trotting over to me just like any happy and lanky shorthaired bird dog mix.

"Uncle Larry"..At least that's what I thought his name was.

The other day one of the kids was walking him on a leash down the street and I was out pulling weeds on the curb. They wandered up to chat and I patted "Uncle Larry" and told him he was a good boy.

The kid asked me, "What did you call him?"

"Uncle Larry. Isn't that his name?"

The kid looked at me like I was nuts and slowly replied, "His name is Huckleberry."

Yep, I'm officially the old geezer on the corner...:bored:

Great story!

About 50 years ago a buddy of mine named Thayne was a bright college student. A beautiful young lady moved in next door. He couldn't help but notice her. She had a dog. One day he heard her out in the yard calling out, "Thayne, come here." She repeated that several times so he goes busting out of his front door, totally surprised that she knew his name. As he ran up to the fence separating the two yards she displayed a shocked look on her face. He quickly asked her what she needed. Perplexed, she explained that her dog, Dane, had disappeared and she was hoping he could hear her calling him. Thayne mumbled something and disappeared back into the house.

Now he is a geezer. But, not is those days. He called it "wishful thinking overwhelming common sense".

Not the least bit suprising considering the "Norman in the icebox" incident. 😉
