A quote from a book I am reading:
“At the bottom of William Clark’s notes for November 16, 1805, he calculated how far the expedition had come to reach the ocean. The “Quick Sand” River (Sandy River, east of today’s Portland, Oregon) was 165 miles away, and the first rapids of the Columbia were 190 miles upriver. But the distance to the expedition’s starting point at the mouth of the Missouri, Clark estimated, was a staggering 4,162 miles. That final estimate-compiled by dead reckoning during the long journey- was within 40 miles of the actual distance”

Yes it is....They did some amazing stuff back then with less tech stuff than we have today. My hats off to the pioneers of yesteryear.
