Headphone jack on smart phone doesn't work

I got a Samsung Galaxy S8+ ($$$!) a couple of months?ÿ ago. Yesterday when I tried to use headphones for the first time, there was no icon in the status bar and the 'phones didn't work at all. I tried another set that I know work and there was no joy there either.

The internet says to poke a paper clip in there and go fishing for lint. I'm a little hesitant to shove something in there. Any ideas? Thanks

I'd consider gentle use of a toothpick rather than a metal paper clip.

There is lots of advice out there.?ÿ It could be software or settings rather than a hardware problem.?ÿ If you are connected via Bluetooth it might not drive the headphone jack at the same time.?ÿ Check all settings related to audio.?ÿ Be sure apps are up to date (PlayStore, My apps and Games).

Working outdoors, I've always had problems with stuff getting in the headphone jack of my phones until I got an Otterbox cover..

Found some plugs to cover the hole while not in use.

They come in basic plastic to jewel embedded studs.

You can spray compressed air in there or use a toothpick if you are wary of using a paperclip.

Take the battery out to make positive that nothing will get cross circuited.

Shine a light in there and take a visual.

Phone jacks will work with 3 pole (audio) and 4 pole (audio & microphone) headphone styles.

BTW, bluetooth headphone are awesome, even the cheap ones on EBay.

Blue for SWMBO - these feature an on/off switch that when turned on will automatically pare with last device.

Orange for me

They also are great to use with DishTV when everyone else is wanting some quiet.

I appreciate the input, guys. Thanks. I'll give these suggestions a try. I do have an Otterbox for it, but I carried it case-less in my pocket for a couple of months.?ÿIf I can't get it to work right bluetooth sounds like the way to go. Ticks me off because it was a very expensive phone.

I was surprised the forum software fetched stuff at my link URL and turned it into an inserted image with its embedded links.?ÿ It did that the first time when I just pasted in the link, but when I edited it again to select "add link" it didn't show that right away.?ÿ Now I see the added stuff.

Seems like an undesirable behavior for the forum, but I don't know how to defeat it.?ÿ I see it didn't happen with the links from @a-harris and I wonder how he prevented it.

Edit: So I posted this and when the page refreshed it no longer had the image.?ÿ I'm confused.

@ Bill93

I did not make an uplink.

Cut & pasted a couple of EBays listing from the FireFox command line to reply box.

Your prior listing opens with a pic and link inside of a box like it appeared on the webpage you found it on.

If you have a sweet set of headphones and want to convert them to received Bluetooth, check out some adapters that will receive a Bluetooth signal and connect to your headphones and fit in your pocket.

These things will transmit and receive from 33ft to 160ft depending and cost from $15 to well over $100 and connect one or more devices at the same time.

I'm a little embarrassed by the simplicity, but I got those headphones to work by blowing the jack out with compressed air and then plugging the 'phones in. Huzzah! Thanks everyone for your input.
