Guess I'll be calling him in the next hour or so to see how things are and how much damage was done. On a lighter note (if there can be in this situation) Her last name was Gurley.
Tim is a good friend and an excellent Surveyor. I hope the damage was not too bad.
Edit: I just spoke to Tim. He told me he lost everything....dam!
That happened a couple of years ago in Livingston to a surveyor buddy of ours. Another surveyor buddy, Alan Cook who posts here, is on the fire department and went and put out the fire. Tough to come back, but Joe Dan isn't known for following the current. He just cinched up his boots the next morning and went to work trying to piece together anything he could. Last I heard, he was still kicking. Your buddy will recover I'm sure. My prayers are with him.
Sorry to hear that. Many records cannot be replaced easily. Hopefully much of the newer work was on hard drives. Maybe they can hire an outfit to recover the data if it was not backed up off site.
Maybe he was getting close to retirement? I've always heard the old time surveyors wished they burned all their records upon retirement.
Seriously though, it is a good lesson for others to learn. Scan your documents and back them up off site.
Oh crap!! :-O
That's horrible that he lost everything but thank goodness he didn't lose his life. Maybe there is a way we can all do something to try to gather up some surveying stuff to help him get back on his feet??
What does he need?
I mean, you say he lost everything...I have some older equipment..I can send...
Joe,
I am semi-retired now and offered all my equipment to him. He said he needed to get a grip on what happened first and what he may need. Insurance is aware and taking action to help. Many surveyors in the area offered as you did. The bad thing is he is recovering from back surgery last Thursday.
I will tell him that you and Angel offered. It's amazing how close knit we all are when something like this happens. I am sure he would thank you for your offer.
Thank you both!
I see..well I can't imagine what he's trying to process at this time...good grief.
Keep us posted..
Yea definitely keep us posted! Maybe Wendell can post a link or something and we can all pitch in together to help the guy out with whatever works. Small, medium, large, it all works when everyone bands together to help another. :good:
Joe and Angel....
again...thank you. I know if he was able to get up and see this post he would be amazed. I'll let you know as things progress. Right now it looks like 5 businesses were affected to the tune of 1.2 mil.
I'm sure Tim Campbell LS is very appreciative of your thoughts!!
Thanks again!
I can help with some basic survey truck stuff.
Tribrachs, prism's, poles, etc.
Someone let me know.
Thanks,
Randy
If someone could post a list of what he needs I'm sure most of it could be found "here". Most of us have downsized and have extra equipment laying around.
Stacy,
I'll call him tomorrow morning and ask. I think his meds from the back surgery, combined with this morning may hinder his answering the phone.
Didn't this happen to Nate's dad's shop some years ago? All his records were lost if I recall.
Let us know if we can do anything, Craig.
He is a VAS member. I bet we can get many surveyors to help out.

" a lot of fires lately"
reminds me of a job I was on in the early '90's - two of the parcels adjacent to the project were owned by one guy- who'd been chronically under employed- (saw mill had shut down in the area)
came to work one morning and the nicer place had burned down during the night-
the project manager's comment was-
"two mortgages rubbing together must create a lot of friction"
