Short answer is usually a damaged hard drive or corrupted file system. Corrupted file system can be due to failure of hard drive or damage from a virus, etc.

It means bend over and kiss your data goodbye. I had that same error message about two months ago. Had to replace the machine. Tried replacing just the hard drive. Turns out it must have been a power surge that got the HD because most of the other components of the system were also fried.

IF you are very lucky you might be able to reinstall the OS from a boot cd (you did make one of those, right?). If not, try Spinright to see if you can recover something. Just know the odds are not in your favor.

Sometimes you get lucky. In a lot of cases the sections of the drive used for system files wear out first. If key system files are corrupt it causes a fatal crash. In most cases if the offending drive will spin up, you can install it as a slave drive in another computer and access the data.

Good Luck
