I posted a thread on this a while ago, but am still having trouble. This is the original thread [msg]9613[/msg]
The point symbols I am speaking of are the regular Carlson point symbols. I currently use the block SPT4 for my regular survey shots. This is basically a "circle" with a "node" in the middle. I personally like this one.
If I need to change the point from say my PTS-SURVEY Layer to say my PTS-CORNERS layer, I have to either window the entire point, or select both the nide and the circle.
I like how the point number, elevation, and description are all controlled by their seperate layers, however they are somehow linked to the point node. I would like the point mark or circle to be controlled the same way.
I have gone through all the settings I can think of, and haven't found anything.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
The way I handle this scenario is to take an ASCII or text file of the points and convert it to a dxf file. Then using the command DXFIN I get the point node on layer 0, the point number on layer 1, the point description on layer 3 and the point elevation on layer 4. You can then rename the layer, change the color and resize the text to your liking.

The default is that all attributes are linked. You have somehow disassociated the point mark and node. Do the following before drawing points.
"Settings" pulldown
"Configure"
"General Settings"
under "Object Linking"
put a checkmark before "Group Point Entities"
"OK"
"Exit"
Now draw your points. When you listed a point now, all entities will be shaded? This is especially important if you move your point number/point elevation/point description away from the point to make the points visible. Pick the point number and all the associated entities will let you know where they are. Especially important if you use the "Move Points" command.
If you select the point number and the point symbol does not say "I'm over here" the points were object linked when drawn.
Want to change layers, pick any one thing, point symbol, point number, point elevation or point description and you get them all. Only the point symbol changes layer however. It is more complicated if you want to use multiple point number, description or elevation layers.
I always use Object Linking for points.
Other hints.
I regularly use a slew of point layers: PNTS as default, PNTS-DEED, PNTS-SURVEY, PNTS-UTIL, PNTS-EP, PNTS-BLDG, PNTS-CONC, PNTS-FENCE, ETC/ETC, All point numbers are on the PNTNO layer, point elevations are on the PNTELEV layer, point descriptions on PNTDESSC layer. If I freeze the PNTS-BLDG layer, all attributes of the building points disappear. Typically all my points are 3D on a Z elevation. Also I work most of the time with my PNTELEV layer frozen so I see none at all.

Paul,
I have tried all of the above suggestions, except the dxf, and still no go. I will have to keep plugging away at it.
Being in the field all day, and ot getting to the office until late at night makes calling carlson tech support difficult.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Are your point blocks a group, meaning when you select any of the part of the point block does the whole block highlight as if its all selected? If not the hit Ctrl+A and this will group the point together. I'm not sure if that helps you or answers your problem. Ctrl+A toggles point grouping on/off.

Thanks, once I changed all the settings listed above, and then the CRTL-A works like a champ.
