Any recommendations?
I have searched a few (Jeep Patriot, Dodge Journey, Kia Sorento, Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tuscon and Ford Escape) and just wanted to gather more info.
It will be used primarily to transport kids to and fro and occasionally on construction job sites so I need something that will handle that.
MPG is not all that important. (I travel less than 10,000 miles/year)
Thanks in advance.

We like our 2008 Nissan Rogue.
I bought a RAV4 about 8 months ago and am delighted.
It's a stripped-down version - 2WD, 4 cyl, no options other than the large wheels. There is a third seat option which I did not get. In Tucson, which I think would qualify as "suburban traffic", I get about 26 mpg city/28 mpg highway (weird, I know).
Plenty of cargo room, lots of bells and whistles even in the 'basic' configuration.
I only have about 4500 miles on it, but so far zero problems and complaints. It was Consumer Reports' highest-rated crossover.
Recent reports rank the 2014 Subaru Forrester as a good choice. It is also reported to have the best crash ratings in its class. Most Subaru vehicles have outstanding visibility.
There is also a slightly smaller option in the Subaru XV Crosstrek.
I'm happy with my 2011 Xterra. An acquaintance has had several problems with his Jeep Patriot.
Volkswagen Taureg. That thing will go anywhere.
YES! Ultimate survey rig.
Plenty of room for the latest in survey gadgets.
Last fall, I drove a Ford Escape rental car from Boston to Pittsburg. It had the echo tech turbo charged motor it had more than enough power and got 24 MPG and I was not trying for top MPGsome of the time. It rode good and was comfortable. Our family car is a Ford Edge. I like both of them. I would recommend that you get a model with a back up camera. It makes it a lot safer when backing up.

Comes in handy when the primary camera is down. 😀

We just got a Dodge Journey about 3 months ago, my wife and I are very happy with it. Rides great, and has seating for 7 so its really good for hauling the kids and their friends. And with the third row seats down plenty of storage room. If I ever need to replace my Jeep Cherokee for work I would definitely get a Dodge Journey.
Give it a test drive.
