Cattle prices are far higher today than they have ever been. That is the absolute truth.

That, of course, is in today's dollars per pound. There have been times in years past when they were priced higher relative to the buying power of that time's dollar.

Beef, and virtually all consumer foods, are priced relative to the demand and the relative wealth of the consumers. Low demand, low prices. High percentage of the population poor, low prices. The demand is currently high. The supply has taken several major hits in recent years, e.g. the massive early winter snow last year that wiped out major herd numbers. The general population is far richer than they ever want to admit. Beef has high input costs and a widely dispersed producer base. Chickens, for example, have a far lower input cost and are now almost totally vertically integrated from the egg to the meat section in the supermarket. The final price on chicken in the store is primarily based on the level of greed of four massive corporations. Pork is getting closer every year to that same stranglehold. So, when the average beef consumption is high, it is an indicator of consumer wealth.

It doesn't take all that much antibiotics when cattle are grown in pastures. Where the antibiotics come in is when they are confined to feedlots. Then it takes a lot of antibiotics to grow them, keep them healthy in the confined conditions.

To grow animals for the mass market it would be hard if they were all grass fed. The amount of production would be more limited. If the only beef available was grass fed it would probably cost a whole lot more. I been trying to cut back on the beef for health reasons, but I certainly have enough grass to have all I want.

The farmer will treat you better, if you have cash. So will the butcher.
I suppose so will the baker, and the candlestick maker!

🙂
