Today, I traveled 41 miles from my doorstep to attend a farm auction. Of the approximately 300 people in attendance, I was the only one there who knew who I was. I cannot remember such a thing happening to me, ever. The sale site was within two miles of where I have completed six surveys. I attended college with a fellow who lives about three miles from there. The now-retired Register of Deeds lives on the corner where I turned off the highway.
Twice, years ago, I traveled about 125 miles to an auction and ran in to a number of people I knew, including one that was a classmate in grade school.
Will go back tomorrow to haul this little gold mine home.
That is a jewell.
Well, I guess I was wrong when I thought you knew the majority of people within 50 miles. But I'll bet if you got into a discussion with just about any of them at the sale you would have come up with a common connection.
I find that many times when I go to a public event locally I know several people but other times I don't know anyone. So it varies.
To tell the truth, I did strike up a conversation with a couple of fellows who were further from home than I was, in the opposite direction. One noted the cap I was wearing and asked if I worked for that ag salvage company. They had done business with them five times but I had only been there once. That business is 180 miles from my home. Mike's Equipment Company in Buhler, KS is a rare business. Those who purchase all sorts of farm equipment with problems, then resell the functionally-sound components most sought-after by owners of identical equipment.
I am still looking for that JD 71 Flex planter. Hint hint. With depth bands. Darn hunters drove the prices up for food plots. LOL.
